"Lots of minerality, as well as terrific notes of honeyed stone fruits, acacia flowers, and orange blossom, all emerge from the 2016 Chardonnay Taylor Ridge, which comes from a site near the town of Occidental on the Sonoma Coast. Nicely concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and exotic (it almost has a Riesling-like character), it offers notes of honeyed stone fruits, mint, toasted bread, acacia flower and orange rind along with beautiful minerality, notable concentration, and good acidity. 93pts
Also from the Sonoma Coast, the 2016 Chardonnay English Hill spent 18 months on less in 1-3-year-old barrels. It has a toasty, brioche, pineapple, and caramelized orange-laced bouquet as well as a medium-bodied, concentrated, slightly honeyed style that needs air to show at its best. 92pts
Moving to the reds, the 2016 Pinot Noir Taylor Ridge comes all from the Swan clone and was mostly destemmed (18% whole clusters) and spent 18 months in 20% new oak. This beautiful, classic Pinot Noir has lots of earth, foresty notes as well as cedary herbs, spice, and sweet red and black fruits. It’s a classy, balanced, medium-bodied effort that will keep for at least 7-8 years. 92pts
More black cherry, black raspberry, and foresty, stemmy notes emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir English Hill. Fermented with 25% stems and aged in the normal 20% new French oak, this brilliantly textured, seamless Pinot Noir shines for both its complex, nuanced bouquet as well as its awesome texture and finish. It’s a stunning wine well worth seeking out. 95 pts
The 2016 Pinot Noir Stuller Vineyard saw more stems (30%) as well as a longer elevage, spending 22 months in 17% new oak. More scorched earth, dried soils, and sweet red fruits emerge from the glass and it hits the palate with a fruit-forward, soft, charming, and incredibly delicious style. It’s one of the more forward wines in the lineup yet I suspect it will still keep for 7-8 years or more. 92pts
Lastly, the 2016 Syrah Occidental Hills is outstanding and has a classic Sonoma Syrah bouquet of bay leaf, game, pepper, and spiced red and black fruits. This beauty is medium-bodied, balanced, has a pretty, silky texture, and a great finish. It’s another outstanding wine from winemaker Kurt Beitler. 90pts
The 2017 West Pole Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast boasts a big, opulent bouquet of assorted red and black fruits as well as plenty of classic Sonoma Coast spice, dried flowers, and leafy herbs. Rounded, medium-bodied, and elegant, it’s an outstanding Pinot Noir geared for drinking over the coming 5-6 years. This wine comes from the English Hill, Taylor Ridge, and Stuller vineyards (all on the Sonoma Coast) and was 70% destemmed and spent 21 months all in used barrels. 91pts" -JD Jan 31, 2020
