Newport RI restaurants, etc.

never been, as far as i can recall.

byo scene? what’s good?

I was just in Newport and we ate at the Thames St Kitchen. Limited menu, decently priced, BYOB. Food was good, but there are several caveats. The big one is that there are no stems, and they are proud of that. They provide tumblers for wine, citing the Italian practice of doing so. Fine, to a point, and it works for a lot of wines, especially the rustic ones. But not for all. I’m not sure what they would do if you brought your own stemware. The menu changes, but is always from a limited set of ingredients. No vegetarian choices, which is odd given they type of clientele they’re aiming at. I asked what they do for vegetarians, and got a shrug and a reply that when informed they will look at what they have on hand and put something together.

They are trying so hard to be non pretentious that they’re pretentious about it. That said, it’s worth it if the menu items are in your wheelhouse and you either don’t mind the lack of stemware or can bring your own.

thanks mark - that’s pretty funny. i’ll check it out.

bumping this thread for more info if anyone has…

wine, beer, restaurants, anything cool. thanks.

have a res at thames st kitchen.

Black Pearl on the pier was decent.

Whitehorse Tavern if you don’t mind eating in the oldest bar in America. Fun experience.

after going to the oldest synagogue, it seems fitting. thanks!

tsk was really solid and delicious. very easy to find something you want here. did 4 apps and 2 entrees for the three of us. over the top friendly and hospitable. brought my own zaltos.

matunuck oyster bar is, however, off the charts. i think maybe the best oysters i’ve had in the states (although wellfleets last summer in wellfleet were great too). great atmosphere on the water, la pierre muscadet, terrific stuffies, etc.

might try jamestown fish tomorrow, but might not be up for the drive out there.

TSK is a nice creative restaurant. They do pull out stems if you bring a sparkling… http://www.thamesstreetkitchen.com . Bouchard Restaurant has some really nice food but the prices are on the higher side… http://www.restaurantbouchard.com. People love Mamma Luisa for Italian … http://www.mammaluisa.com/2005/mamma_luisa_7405_content.html … Castle Hill is luxurious … http://www.castlehillinn.com/food-wine-newport-rhode-island/ . I’ve liked Fluke Wine Bar & Kitchen … http://www.flukewinebar.com . The best restaurant in the region is just north of Newport in Bristol. It is Persimmon … http://www.persimmonbristol.com .

PS - Glad you enjoyed TSK. Matunuck Oyster is the best but I avoid it in the summer months because of the crowds. For me it’s Fall-Winter-Spring place.

i can’t seem to figure out why the ice cream selection here is miserable.

had tricycle ice cream sandwiches at the farmer’s market which were amazing, but they don’t have a retail store.

frosty freez gets crazy attention but it’s a crappy shack serving hershey’s ice cream??

Hi;

Any updates?

TSK has closed, trying to choose an upscale place that has a broad menu (meat, fish, vegetarian option).

upscale is pretty relative but had a very solid ingredient-focused meal at stoneacre pantry.

22 Bowens has what you’re looking for. Upscale, nautical, on the water and diverse menu. Ate there last fall and it was good. Nice vibe if you get a table on the windows.

Try Bouchard for elegant French or their newish restaurant called The Revolving Door. I have also liked Fluke each visit.

Btw Stoneacre Pantry is on the move and not yet open. The owners do have a tapas restaurant open which I have not been to but it looks good.

I’ve really enjoyed the coffee crusted duck and the restuffed lobster at Bouchard.

Went to the Revolving Door last night. The concept is to have a new guest chef every 4-6 weeks. There are two menus. One is the “house” menu which is available every night and the guest chef menu. Last night was the start of the new chef so the synchronicity of water/drinks, bread, and food was a bit off. The wine and drinks list is very good and inventive, respectively. I had a the guest chef’s tuna tartare on a bed of papaya and topped with small dab of guacamole and seasoned with a spicy soy sauce as an appetizer. Done very well with the exception that the papaya was under ripe. The chef should have switched to pineapple as it’s easier to find ripe fruit. Main meal was prime flat iron steak from the “house” menu. It was placed on a bed of ratatouille with a middle eastern herbed butter…nicely done. I would give this place a 4 out of 5 stars with the potential to be closer to 5 when drinks and food are delivered when expected. The bar is very lively and does have a tv on mute for the bar roosters. Nice small outside patio for drinks and light bites…not sure they have full meals outside(?). I will visit again when the next guest chef comes onboard and will make that visit after a week to make sure the kitchen is coordinated.

On Thames Street, go to Zelda’s for a dinner and then to IYAC for drinks.

Pasta Beach (on Memorial) - right around the corner from Tennis HOF. Awesome wood fired pizza and fresh made pastas…

Bump.

Looks like we’ll be staying in Newport for three nights in early/mid Sept. Any current hotel, restaurant, and other recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks!

have fun… stop by nyc along the way?

no fail, Matunuck Oyster bar - i’d eat several meals there actually. https://www.rhodyoysters.com/
