I may be there for a few days in January. Any recommendations on places to stay and eat? On the latter I am interested in both fancy and holes in the wall.
I can’t help too much, but our son did go to college there so we did visit a few times. There are 2 nice casino’s in the area (Wind Creek Montgomery, and Wind Creek Wetumpka). Both recently built. I’ve only been to Wetumpka-nice rooms, decent steakhouse for the area-its about 15 minutes away from Montgomery. Wind Creek Montgomery may have similar offerings but I haven’t been there.
There is also a retail area in Montgomery called East Chase, Many chain stores and restaurants, but there was a decent place we took him to called Firebirds. I think it is a chain also but did have a bit of a decent wine list-good for Montgomery.

I can only give you some information based on a few years ago and some present suggestions.
The best places to eat.
Pretty good food.
Central
Vintage Year (Cloverdale)
Hole in the wall.
Capital Oyster Bar
El Rey (Cloverdale)
Derk’s Filet and Vine (Meat and 3 in Cloverdale. Great for Saturday Breakfast!)
There is only one decent hotel. The downtown Marriott hotel.

I have been to both Central and Vintage Year (Cloverdale) but it has been a while.
Prattville which is on the North side of Montgomery has an RSA hotel on a Robert Trent Jones golf course which is very nice.
I’m afraid Montgomery is pass-through territory for me these days. Son is in school in Birmingham and Daughter is at Auburn. If i hear of any new spots i’ll update. Son may have some suggestions from some of his classmates.
