GOLDEN STEER - LAS VEGAS

I’m back in Vegas next week and was thinking of hitting the Golden Steer one evening…any one else been there?
There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews…from best steak ever to “stay away”…
also doing LOS and Frankies Tiki Room…
old school week in Vegas.

MOD - move to epicurian forum if needed -I’m just after a quick response.

THANKS!!!

Wow, Golden Steer. I haven’t been there since the 80’s, it is old Vegas for sure. I do have a friend that eats there fairly often and loves it, but way off the radar for tourists.

Frankies Tiki Room rocks, but I hope you like Punk Rock and Smoke. Owned by The Double Down which is one of the premiere Punk Rock bars in the country. Great Rum drinks and Tiki cups designed by mostly local tattoo artists.

Thanks. I’ll post a review of my experience at the Steer and Frankies.

Just call me… “off the radar”!

I’ve eaten there about 3 times and always enjoyed my steak.

I went there a couple years back and loved the old school dining. The steaks were great. We sat in the room with 4 tables, where Frank Sinatra and his group used to sit. Great service and very nostalgic. Definitely Old Las Vegas. I’d go back!!
Have fun!! [cheers.gif]

Can anybody give me a run down on the wine list? I can’t find it online and the only picture seem to be the one that sits on the table with BTG J Lohr ect.

It seems I brought one bottle less than we need so I’m thinking of byob but no idea how obscure a wine I might need to safely stay off the list.

The Steer is the truest “Old Las Vegas steakhouse” that I can think of.

I can picture Elliott Gould’s character from the Ocean’s movies sitting in a favorite booth and holding forth.

Get ready for some old style red velvet and gold leaf.

Fankies makes pretty good Tiki drinks. It is a true Tiki Dive Bar. Best after 4 am…to the first sign of dawn. Have a variety of drinks rather than the same one more than once. And use Uber!

If you hit the Double Down…try the “Ass Juice.” (Seriously, it’s a cocktail.) Pray the Thee Swank Bastards are playing and that Szandora is with them. Mind bending. (In a weird twist, her grandfather in law as named after me.)

LOS is about 100 yards from a great bar and lounge called the Green Door. It’s a 60 dollar cover charge, but tell them you want cocktails in the Blue Room and enjoy true Nevada ambience!

I think it would be best to bring a steak-worthy wine in a magnum and pay corkage.

Hahahah

To recap, we did bring our own wine an 18 Bordeaux that I had picked up at total wine. Good thing, because the list seems odd and thin. Lots of Pinot though, if that’s ones thing with steak. They did have a Turley Zin for like $90, but I don’t remember one cab based wine that was orderable, either due to markup or lack of interest. We did order a basic Michel Chablis as a starter ~$65.

It is a very cool place and the best thing about the night was we lucked into the Sinatra table. When I called for reservations all they had was 9:30 and I inquired as to how late they were open and she insisted we would have plenty of time as they were open until 11:00. Apparently this isn’t the typical last seating is at 11:00 (or 10:30 like the website says), but a hard close.

We ordered king crab app (no), Caesar salads (excellent) and steaks (very good) unfortunately all 3 came too soon. To make matters even more obvious both waiters (yes you have 2) said goodbye to us at 10:30 and passed us on to someone else, maybe a bus boy, walking past us with their book bags on the way out.

I’m not too mad as we did get to sit in the Sinatra seat, but certainly did not get the full Sinatra experience.

  • Anton, it was our last night in town so we couldn’t hit up the late night mentions, but they sound up my alley and will make a note for the next trip.

Long shot but I’ve been trying to recall the name of a Vegas dinner house that I think was near the Golden Steer location on Sahara, but on the South side of the street. It was an old-timey place with leather booths in (IIRC) individual alcoves as well as a main area. I used to go there for business dinners in the ‘80s. Food was typical basic but upscale stuff and, I think, may have been owned by a man from either Chicago or New York.

Was this Phillip’s Supper Club? It’s a goner. Was there once for a wine dinner. Pamplemouse (sp?) was on Sahara but further east.

Not Du-Par’s inside the old casino? It’s pretty old school.

Love the Golden Steer - it reminds me of Musso & Frank’s here in Hollywood. Always try to hit it up when I’m there.
