B&B's in Tuscany

We prefer staying at Bread & Breakfast style places for the resources. If anyone has some specific recommendations for Tuscany they would be most appreciated. No locations would be off limits but within an hour or hour and a half drive to Siena or Florence. TIA

Also search for agriturismos.

Sorry my specific reqs are too old to be relevant.

Or you could just stay with Bill Klapp. [snort.gif]

These guys are ninjas (and their FAQ is often hilarious):

This is a winery that produces excellent wine in Montalcino. I have not stayed there, others who have have raved about it. I have met the owner who posts here occasionally, and he is a very nice guy:

Bill is in Piedmont.

Thanks Ken. This place looks awesome.

Been awhile for us as well, but tons of old farmhouses turned into small inns, or essentially B&Bs. We stayed in one just outside of San Gimignano.

Paul, Do you have the information on it?

Was very nice. They own a bakery in town, so great patissery. But there are a ton of these around at different prices. They were friendly, and just south of the town a few miles.

We had to leave REAL early for Florence one morning - before breakfast was served. They told us to drive into the city and down through what becomes a pedestrian area. Pulled right up to the bakery, which we had bought pastries from already, not knowing they owned our place. They made us cappucinos to go, and gave us a box full of pastries to take with us.

I stay here:

Not a true 100% B&B but small, intimate, breakfast provided, nice facilities including a pool and tennis courts, owned by the Antinori family.

I had this one bookmarked. We must have considered staying here as well.

I can’t recommend it enough. The staff went above and beyond for us the last time we were there on top of upgrading us to the 3 bedroom villa instead of the single room apartment we requested.

This place was highly recommended by Andrew Gelb and we really enjoyed our stay here in the heart of Montalcino.

I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

Must be popular. It is fully booked for most of the year.

Just booked this Joe. Thanks for the tip. It looks great. Where did you visit while you were there?

We visited Tignanello which is practically next door. You could almost walk to it from your room. If you look at the photo on the Fonte de Medici website the vineyards in the upper and left part of the photo are the Tignanello vineyards.

If you look in that same photo to the bottom and right those are Antinori’s chianti vineyards. They run all the way through the valley and over the hill to his Chianti winery Badia a Passignano. The winery is in a monastery from around 395AD. I’d recommend booking dinner at Osteria Passignano (excellent restaurant; think they recently got a Michelin star) and a tour and tasting beforehand. They’ll take you briefly in the vineyards, through the cellars, etc… and you’ll taste several Antinori wines at the restaurant. Nice way to kill too birds with one stone so to speak.

We also visited the Cantina in Chianti Greve. Easy way to taste your way through several wines without climbing into the car.

Beyond Tuscany we used Fonte de Medici as a home base for day trips to Montalcino and Bolgheri. Both are quite doable in a day if you don’t feel like moving hotels during your stay. Our favorite in Montalcino was Casse Basse and in Bolgheri was Tua Rita.

stayed here a number of years ago and ejoyed it thoroughly… http://www.lupinari.com/

also here http://www.palazzodelcapitano.com/, which was really more of a very small hotel than a B&B, but in a very small, non touristy hill town

great tips - thanks

Fonte medici is nice. If you want to visit Tig., make sure you arrange it ahead of time.
We had a really nice stay a Castello Gabbiano.
Definitely go to Greve from either. Check out the large winebar on the opposite side of the street from the main square, which might be the one someone named above. Also shop at the cheese/salumi place in the square (falorni?).

Can the hosts at Medici arrange a visit to Tignanello?

Yes. Arrange it through them.
