Belharra Sampler 3-Pack

2017 Belharra Las Madres Vineyards Syrah - Carneros Sonoma County
122 cases produced, fermented in open-top fermenters, aged 18 months in 20% new French oak, no stem-inclusion, no fining or filtering 14.5%

Sonoma had an ideal growing season in 2017, and Las Madres showcases a fantastically rich Syrah. Rendered fat and beef broth intensify the classic crushed violets on the nose. The richness and roundness continue on the pallet with elements of white pepper, cassis, and licorice. Wrapped in the cool-climate olive tapenade characteristic of the Carneros, the broadness of this wine lingers through a long finish.

2019 Belharra Alder Spring Vineyard Pinot Noir - Mendocino County
155 cases produced, fermented in open-top fermenters, aged 11 months in 25% new French oak, no fining or filtering 13.8%

Rich, spicy and savory, our second vintage of fruit from this storied Mendocino vineyard oozes black cherry liquor with a touch of pine. From first smell through the pallet, dark red fruits give structure to a wine with a step-up in weight. Our mountain source grants a touch of minerality to the finish.

2020 Carneros Las Madres Vineyard Rosé of Syrah (Dry) - Carneros Sonoma County
95 cases produced, stainless-steel ferment and storage, partial malo fermentation, filtered, 13.0%

The seventh edition of our direct-press Rosé carries a structured stonefruit on the nose, and varietally distinct high-tones. White flower and rosewater perfume waft from the glass. Full and complex through the mid-pallet, a weighty richness pulls across the balanced acidity and leaves flavors of apricot on a lengthy finish.

Belharra Vertical 3-pack
2016 Belharra Las Madres Vineyards Syrah - Carneros Sonoma County
139 cases produced, fermented in open-top fermenters, aged 18 months in 20% new French oak, no stem-inclusion, no fining or filtering 14.5%

Dark purple upon the pour, this brooding Syrah is elegant but approachable. The classic Las Madres nose of dusty violets is augmented by a lively incense and perfumed fruit. A core of structured olive and red drupe last throughout the pallet and into a long finish. Savory spice is wrapped in a softened mouthfeel throughout the experience.

A clear licorice overtone on the nose intertwines purple fruit and dark flowers. A brightness in the mid-pallet balances a low-end savoriness, lending distinction to a fruit-driven Syrah. The power is clearly here, but it does not overwhelm. Instead, silky and round tannins escort a lasting finish of delicate spice and flavor.

About Us
Our first vintage was 2013 making Las Madres Syrah. From 50 cases, we’ve put every dime back into the label to expand varietals and vineyards, always with a focus on quality and value to consumers. With two full-time Napa production jobs and an 18-month old, our personal project often takes a back-seat, but it is truly one of the most rewarding projects we’ve worked on.

Belharra is the name of a legendary surf spot located on the Basque coast off Socoa, France, where storm tides hit an underwater outcropping and cause a rare wave of immense power. Such forces, after a vast journey, create a diverse natural beauty. Our philosophy mirrors the riders of these waves: patiently waiting for opportunities, understanding the contours of each current and practicing the craft with vigilance.

Anne Fogerty is the assistant winemaker at Rivers-Marie. Hard work, community, and sharing an infectious smile were the mainstays of a first job at the age of 13 behind the counter of a neighborhood hardware store in Minnesota. Employment in the vineyards led to a job in the winery, and the opportunity for more learning and even longer days. Caught up in the promise of adventure and travel in wine production, Anne followed harvests around the world after college, always landing back in northern California among family and friends. She enjoys the sunshine here year-round, while building towards her professional and personal goals.

Camille Gaio is the director of winemaking for Fayard Wines. Raised in the French Alps, Camille graduated as a sommelier and worked across France before shifting her attention to an education in wine science and viticulture at the University of Bordeaux while working for a premium Chateau. Camille turned a love of the alpine slopes into a love of the ocean swell while on the Western coast of France, and followed the waves and vines to dynamic international vintages in California, Australia, and New Zealand. She is now continuing her growth in Napa Valley, always with an eye on the tide.

2019 Belharra Alder Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir: Sappy red fruits with a bit of earth, needs a bit of time, opened up more on day 2. Very pure and transparent.

The Syrah sounds like where its at. Sounds super interesting. Also love the origin of the name and the oblig kid pic, funny, that is becoming a thing.

These wines rock! So do the gals!

These sound great. Gotta get up early tomorrow to get my order in.

Here are my notes. I’m not a professional, and please excuse any typos or inconsistencies. I tried my best to provide impressions of the wines and overall I enjoyed all the wines and the experience. Anne and Camille’s dedication to their craft and philosophy are evident and I am confident of their continued success. Thank you for letting me taste them and thank you for letting me participate in this event.

2020 Belharra Rose of Syrah

Light salmon color
Nose of high toned notes of peach, iron, and citrus (primarily grapefruit).
The main flavors identified on the palate were melon, raspberry, and mineral.
Tasted over 2 days, with consistent notes both days.
I would enjoy this with a nice summer meal.
My wife doesn’t care for roses in general, but she said she actually enjoyed this one. That’s rare and high praise.
2018 Belharra Sauvignon Blanc

I have to preface this by saying I don’t drink much Sauvignon Blanc – I’ve drunk plenty from New Zealand, South Africa, and California a long time ago, but I don’t think I’ve had one in years.
That said, this was a fine one.
Pale golden color
The nose was much more fruit-centric than grass/gooseberry/etc. from most I remember in the past. Tropical notes with pineapple as the primary.
The tropical fruit carries through on the palate, with some additional white floral and lime in the mix. Good acidity level makes this a nicely balanced summer sipper.
Would be a nice match for soft cheeses and light seafood courses.

2016 Belharra Syrah Carneros Las Madres Vineyard

Tasted over 3 days.
Dark opaque ruby, quite dark.
Clean nose of cherry, persimmon, and a touch of heat. The nose is very much about the fruit.
Day 1 – Full bodied, tannins are present but in the background, balanced with acids. Today the palate was large and savory with spices of pine and rosemary winning over the obvious fruit, along with some wood influence. Not hard to pick out as New World, and the alcohol is more obvious in this vintage than the others but not off-putting. This is less of a food friendly selection than the others, and will likely reward some short term cellaring (2-4 years).
Day 2 – The acidity has become more prominent which makes the wine more balanced. Quite smooth mouthfeel with cherry now dominant over the spice.
Day 3 – Day three the wine is still lively, and the fruit and wood are dominant.

2017 Belharra Syrah Carneros Las Madres Vineyard

Tasted over 3 days.
Color is pretty much the same as the 2016.
Wow, this is so different than the 2016. High-toned aromas of rhubarb and cranberry, with distinct notes of iron and mineral. It immediately brought to mind the Syrahs of Domaine Faury. If someone told me it was the St. Joseph I wouldn’t have been terribly surprised. With air the nose mellows and becomes even more attractive.
Day 1 – Very round in the mouth, red fruits of raspberry and cherry jump out. The acidity is excellent, and tannins are chewy – this is a well-balanced and very attractive wine. It’s the same alcohol level as the 2016, but it is more in the background this year. Will reward cellaring and will pair well with a wide range of foods from roast chicken to lamb chops.
Day 2 – Even more attractive on day two – the various components have mellowed and melded together to seem even more Rhonish, the fruits moving toward plum and black fruits.
Day 3 – Still a really nice wine, didn’t move much between day 2 and 3. Very nice effort – I wonder if the wood regimen on this one was different from the 2016.
2018 Belharra Syrah Carneros Las Madres Vineyard

Tasted over 3 days.
Once again color is not appreciable different from the 2016 or 2017.
This nose on this one was also completely different from the 2016 and 2017. Upon pop and pour, my first whiff reminded me of a nice Chateauneuf-du-Pape. A strong kirsch note, and something that I have in the past described a Captain Crunch – a sweet corn and grain note. I assure you that’s a good thing in my book. I’m a little surprised it’s not Grenache, but after some air the CdP comparison recedes and the nose becomes one of very pretty floral and fruit notes. Today, this is the prettiest of the noses.
Day 1 – Full-bodied, not at all jammy, with cherry and chocolate as the dominant flavors, and a really nice creaminess. Consensus was this was the favorite of the three wines for current drinking, and while I’m sure it will cellar well in the near and mid term there is no reason to wait. I believe the alcohol was lower on this one than the previous two vintages (I had 13.5% written down, and I’m traveling for work right now so I don’t have the bottle with me). This one seems more New World influence than Old World, and it is utterly charming.
Day 2 – This hasn’t moved much from day 1. And I still like it just as much. Floral and red-fruity. Very pretty.
Day 3 – The wine has started to fade a bit, with the nose more muted, but the balance on the palate is still very nice. For today’s drinking, I’d pop one of these and let the 2017 rest for a couple of years. It’s very enjoyable.

2018 Belharra Pinot Noir Alder Springs Mendocino Country

Color is deep reddish purple, translucent but darker than average Burgundy and properly so.
Nose is mostly tart cherry with a hint of forest floor, but this is very much in the primary phase of development.
Palate matches the nose. Smooth cherry fruit on entry and good length. I didn’t get a chance to follow this over several nights like I did the Syrah but I’d wager it will develop in the cellar and provide additional complexity in a few years. Today it was all about cherry and velvet.

These are truly lovely wines made with detail, care, and attention to each wine’s sense of place. I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy the rosé and Syrahs across several vintages at our annual Las Madres Winemakers Lunch. Anne and Camille are charming, passionate, and super talented! These are beautiful wines at a great price.

Doubled down on the Syrah 3 packs.

I thought the pinot I had was superb. Had a clear sense of place as well as lovely fruit.

Order in, had to try these.

Thanks all for the notes and support. I LOVE that Adam saw the quality across the Syrah vintages. Las Madres employs more of a co-operative choice on pick date between all the winemakers, and no matter the vintage or which end of the maturity spectrum it ends up getting picked on, the quality of the site shows through.

Just got a Syrah 3 pack!

I spent a lot of time with the Syrahs and they were well worth it. I wish I had done so with the Pinot as well but I had to fly out early Monday. My wife enjoyed it Monday night with dinner without me though.

1 of each pack ordered. I already have some of these in my cellar but more is better!

Order in, thank you!

Sorry for the rest of my notes being delayed; my daughter came down with something nasty yesterday (luckily not COVID). I didn’t get the opportunity to follow the wines besides the Pinot, but they were all fantastic. I especially liked the Pinot, but I do think that the vertical of Syrah would be very interesting for a tasting and very interesting blind. I also thought it was very interesting my notes were pretty different from Adam’s.

2020 Belharra Rose of Syrah

I’ve always really liked Rose made from Syrah and this one is superb. Poured at just above fridge temperature and it tastes of summer, but with some complexity. Super smooth and easy to drink, one of these wines you’d really have to be careful not to empty the bottle before you know it! Lovely aromas of white peach, strawberry, and a hint of green, maybe asparagus? Nice clean finish.

2018 Belharra Sauvignon Blanc

A bit of hay on the nose, with lively acidity and a crisp mineral core. Quite a bit more here than I expected, with depth and layers of flavor. A bit of just slightly underripe pineapple, green apple, and papaya on the nose, with great tension and a very long finish. I usually don’t particularly care for California Sauvignon Blanc, even from well-reputed producers but this is great.

2016 Belharra Syrah Carneros Las Madres Vineyard

I’ve had some experience with this vineyard with the Myriad bottling, but this is really quite different. I think it needs a bit of time in the cellar. I found this more subtle and less full throttle than the Myriad versions, but with a clear kinship. There were robust fruit aromas including some black cherry, a bit of earth, and some savory elements, more white pepper than smoke or meat. Palate was lighter bodied and lithe, with a very nice finish. My wife doesn’t at all care for syrah, especially new world, but did think this was quite nice.

2017 Belharra Syrah Carneros Las Madres Vineyard

I’m not really sure I got the old world feel that Adam did from this wine. I did think it was a bit heavier feeling than the 16, perhaps due to the vintage, but got similar fruit driven aromas, with more earth than savage elements. I still got white pepper and a bit more palate presence with relatively fine grained but present tannins if that makes sense. Finish was long but I felt like this was a bit less developed than the 16 even though that also needed time.

2018 Belharra Syrah Carneros Las Madres Vineyard

This was my favorite of the Syrahs and drinking exceptionally well right now. This did taste like Syrah to me; I didn’t get the Grenache that Adam did, but I did think it was definitely the prettiest of the noses as well, with lots of beautiful robust red and dark fruit, currants, and silk on the palate. I did think this felt like more smooth and plush than savory, although there was still an undercurrent of white pepper that was a unifying theme for me. This is just ready to go and very pleasurable to drink at the moment.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate!

I call them like I see (and smell and taste them), and while taste is subjective I can assure you that I could be wrong! I happy to read your notes and see where they are the same and where they are different.

An easy YES on a 3-pk of Syrah. Anne, so happy to see you guys on here!

BOOM, ordered the Vertical! Can’t wait to try. Thanks Belharra & Beserkers!

Syrah pack seems like a great intro. Order in.
