2001 Pegau Cuvee Reservee

Had this wine jn the spring, and it was one of my top 5 wines of the year.

Carl-something sounds very wrong with your bottles.

Last bottle was better, but certainly advanced to the point where the classic CdP character is just starting to be swamped by the shoe polish character. Never seen recessed corks like those, however…

Corks got too dry and lost some of the seal perhaps?

Except for the possibility that bad corks were provided by Pegau, this seems the likeliest explanation given the lack of leakage along the outside of the corks. The argument against this would be that the wines were laying on their sides, so that Relative Humidity on the wine side should be 100%, but I don’t know what else it could be.

Just hoping the problem is not more widespread in my cellar…

Have had 2 of the 2001 in the last few months and both showed great. Sorry for the bad luck!
