Up next is Joh Jos Prum! They will be my last screenshots for now, Tom is taking over.

Now Prum. Oh boy.

Brian - thanks for the posts. great work!

Well, every Auction needs its superstar, and in 2019 that is Willi Schaefer. Rumors abounded that the Spatlese was off the charts amazing, and the final price lived up to that expectation. A new record for this wine- and by quite a margin. 123 Euros as compared to 71 Euros for the 2018 vintage offered last year. The last couple of years, the Spatlese Auction has been heavily supplemented by Christophe to keep the price as reasonable as possible- last year’s overallocation was 199 bottles, meaning 540 were offered and 739 were ultimately sold. This year 360 were offered- and I did not catch the size of the overallocation if any.

The Auslese performed well too- fetching 375 Euros as compared to 305 Euros for the 2018 vintage offered last year. These are 750mL prices.

Rob- to answer your question, the screen was taken down for the 375s while the auctioneer was discussing the magnums. The 375s were not auctioned this year as is the case for those of a number of other producers. On your offering sheet- this is indicated wherever the wine is listed but there is a big X where the minimum bid price should be and the listing in grey overall.

In these instances, the half bottle price will be the bottle price, minus 1 Euro, divided by 2. And so for the 2019 Auslese Auction- the half bottle selling price will be 187 Euros (the 375 quoted above - 1 Euro and divided by 2.)

However, even if someone bid more than 187 per half for the Schaefer, they may not get the wines. If the total bids at 187 Euro or higher is greater than the number of half bottles available, then the commissionaires will allocate them. I am not sure if that will be done based on who placed the highest bids or not. Also, if there are not enough bids at 187 per half to sell all of the half bottles (the 2018 vintage went for 95 Euros per half- the premium for full bottles of the rarer Auslesen is quite high), I do not know if that means all 120 will be sold at a lower price based on the Dutch auction formula generally used here, or there will be unsold half bottles potentially. I suspect the latter since the auction directions set the half bottle price at the formula noted above- but am not entirely sure.

Thank you Brian. I was shocked at how hard it is to keep with all of this. Thank you for tackling the screenshots- it was the only way I could add in my geeky analytics to the mix.

My work day starts soon all, but I will have screen shots up reasonably close to real-time for the last 5 producers after Prum. Maybe a slight delay here and there, but it will get done this morning.

Thanks Brian and Tom for all your hard work. This is my first time following the auction and it’s made it a great experience.

Those Prum prices are pretty strong. Totally shut out even with some strong bids.

I think Prum prices are lower than expected. They were very low last year though. The Auslese in particular is meant to be one of the wines of the auction.

Got a lone bottle of Spat, almost had 2!

I gotta take off for now guys. Happy bidding!

Having a challenge with the print screens- getting them into replies- so rest coming to you old fashioned way with apologies.

Well done Knebel!

200 Euros - 2019 Rottgen Auslese LGK - 750mL
100 Euros - 2019 Rottgen Auslese LGK - 375mL

Schloss Lieser up next.

BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

(just kidding)

2019 Schloss Lieser Domprobst Kabinett - 750mL - 50 Euro
2019 Schloss Lieser Domprobst Kabinett - 1.5L - 120 Euro
2019 Schloss Lieser Doctor Spatlese - 750mL - 130 Euro
2019 Schloss Lieser Doctor Spatlese - 3L - 600 Euro
2019 Schloss Lieser Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese LGK - 750mL - 300 Euro
2019 Schloss Lieser Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese LGK - 1.5L - 1,000 Euro

Where most other usual producers of tiny quantities of Auslese chose to track the half bottle price to the full bottle price, Schloss Lieser joined von Schubert in offering only full bottles this year.

And another strong performance for the Doctor Spatlese. Leaving aside the infrequently appearing Egon Muller Spatlese, since its debut in 2016, the Schloss Lieser Doctor Spatlese is at or near the top Spatlese result. And so it is again in 2020- just beating out Schaefer by 7 Euros this year.

I will make up for it with excessive commentary [wow.gif]

How much are taxes and fees and tariffs? If a bottle hammers for 100 Euro, how much to get it in your cellar in the USA?

Replicating (sort of) the experience of being in Trier we opened all these watching on the sofa.

My wife is somewhat amazed at how much time and money o have thrown at this most peculiar event in the last 11 years. Flying from Abu Dhabi for 8 of them.

And now Dr. Loosen,

2019 Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese GK - 750mL - 46 Euro
2019 Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese GK - 1.5L - 112 Euro
2019 Erdener Pralat Auslese LGK - 750 mL - 401 Euro
2019 Erdener Pralat Auslese LGK - 375 mL - 250 Euro

The Pralat LGK is always a strong performer and in 2019 has done well at 401 Euro compared to 405 Euro last year. Quantities down from 80 to 60 bottles, but given how the sale has gone today- keeping level with prior year on price can be considered a strong result IMHO.

I have a meeting at 9:30, so breaking away for a moment, but will keep track of results as they come in and post the final lots within an hour.

And so, Fritz Haag and Clemens Busch to come shortly- finishing off the 2020 Mosel VDP Auction.
