50th birthday vintage (1971)

1971 d’Yquem … at the upper end of your price range - Flickinger shows some bottles in stock at around $500. I had it a few times and it’s been magical.

Was fortunate to have a bottle of this sourced through Manny @ Rare Wine last year, might have been the best bottle I had last year.

I won a lot at auction in the fall for under $300/750ml bottle.

I would also add burgundy to this list. Rather than focus on producers you want to focus on provenance. At 50yrs that is most important.

Also do your buying now as it will get more expensive in the 2nd half of the year and next year. Big dates always get more expensive the year of 50 etc as it is common to want to buy bday year gifts.

Also, I’ve had some very good 71 petite syrah from CA…

About 9 years ago I had a 1971 Cheval Blanc. Herbal and light but quite enjoyable.

71 Grange is stunning. Never had a disappointing one.
