82 Grand Puy Lacoste is rockin'!

Well then Bob fucking blew it, as his review was of a big, fleshy wine. When he says “heady” and “rich” and draws comparison to the 1990, I don’t expect a “light” and “overcropped” wine.

I guess I should have based my 2003 buying on YOUR decisions instead of Bob.

If only he had made his thoughts known before Bob published his…

FWIW, Jeff steered me on some 2005’s pre-Bob review that ultimately garnered crazy scores. If you have ever had Bordeaux with Jeff, there is no doubt he loves it and has his own, distinct POV.

Eric
That was the first barrel note followed up the next year with…

Not showing as well as it did last year, this effort seems to be lighter

I always wonder about the accuracy of those first tastings 5-6 months after the vintage…just sayin

I know Ed. Bob compared several wines to their 82 and 90 counterparts only to back off a year later. I will say that 2003 futures were a HELL of a lot cheaper than the wines a year or two later. I was pretty fried about this one though. Isn’t Parker a God, able to nail these from barrel? If I want a schmuck’s opinion I will go and taste these myself…

Eric
I was thinking more along the lines of not trusting how representative the barrel samples would be compared to the final bottles.

I might be wrong but it just seems there is too much uncertainty at this stage.

I’m not saying that RMP is given special samples or anything like that.

Some of his comments certainly drove prices like the one I mentioned about mortgaging the hosue

Jeff, great to see you posting TN’s here! If you ever decide to take up Bill’s challenge in D, I’ll cover your back…

Agreed. The '82 and '90 are rock’n wines! I had the '05 on new years eve, it will be a rock star too! I haven’t tasted the '00 in a few years, but I really liked it on release. A GPL that’s under the radar is the '95…it will be kicking some serious A in another 5 years

Agree with the positive comments re: the '82 GPL; it remains one of my absolute favorite wines for current drinking – never had anything less than a stellar bottle. Had the '96 GPL last week, and it was showing surpisingly well; much more open than what I remember just a few short years ago. Tried the '00 GPL at a Commanderie dinner on Monday, and while it is shaping up to be another great wine, I would hold off for at least another 5 years.

For my tastes (and pocketbook!) GPL is pretty much a no-brainer, year in and year out. Thanks for sharing your notes.

Brian

Jeff- what do you think the drinking window of the 05 is if one is looking for some maturation beyond a primary fruit phase?

TIA

Eric… Thanks. That was very cool of you to say.

Faryan… GPL in top vintages is a very long lived wine. My best guess is, between 12 & 18 years after the vintage.

Thanks… It’s fun playing with some of you guys on here. I am popping in some 89 Pomerol notes in about a minute. Are you coming to LA in 2010? We need to plan another dinner.

Who’s? neener

I think you mean whose and not who’s? Right? [wink.gif] If it works for you, I was thinking of using yours! [tease.gif]

Whose…who’s…repression…recession. It’s all the same.

Jeff, you gotta admit that was funny.

Of course I thought it was funny. That is why I answered! [rofl.gif]

Thanks for bringing up the '03 Eric. I also bought some. Doesn’t sound like much will come out of it.

The '05 will be in a primary stage for AT LEAST another 10 years, should start hitting a sweet spot in another 20. I purchased and drank both the '82 and '90 on release and the '05 is a much bigger wine. I won’t be cracking my case for at least another 10 years.

Hopefully this summer…probably early August.

Jeff, do you really think 05 GPL won’t be at a sweet spot until 2035? If so, why would anyone in even their 50’s buy this wine? I checked Parkers optimistic drinking window and it is 2013-2030, which from my experience with his windows translates into 2018 is a good place to start drinking them.

I started to drink the 90 in 2002 and think it has been in a sweet spot since about 2005. I have mixed experiences with the 82 GPL, some more mature and others not quite ready.

I’m basically not opening any 05’s becuase they are just unpleasant at this time,s o, perhaps you are right but I hope not.

Jeff - you purchased and drank the '82 on release? What were you then, about 11 years old???
