BEST Echezeaux and Grands-Echezeaux producers (for the money)

agreed

Another not yet mentioned:
LeMoine Grands Ech. Can be as-good-as-it-gets good. His source…hmmmm…

I think that there would be a few other Echezeaux to add into the mix:

-recent vintages of Grivot
-sometimes Jadot Ech (especially if we’re talkin’ value)
-Georges Noellat, new player
Others as well…

I agree, the new Gerard Mugneret labels are sort of modern generic, I liked the classy old ones.

In Germany, we get ok availability on Cecile Tremblay and the price for her Echézeaux - while not cheap - is at least not outrageous (2011 = 140 Euros / bt). How good is it? I never had it. I like Tremblays Vosne Romanée VV, but I don’t buy it at the price asked for (> 50 Euros / bt).

For “value” I like the Echezeaux from Regis Forey. I like the style and it ages really well. It’s crept up in price a bit and is now around 85 Euros / bt., but it used to be at just over 60 Euros / bt. - a great price for that wine. It’s certainly not among the best, but it’s really good in my view.

Correct, from Jasper’s tome, “The domaine is now run by Gérard’s son Pascal who is also one of the sharecroppers for Mugneret-Gibourg, whence comes the Echézeaux”.

Confuron-Cotetidot make a delightful example. Much like their Clos Vougeot the parcel is not located in the most revered terroir (Les Treux) but that doesn’t carry through to the final product. Tremendous success year in and year out.

The only name I would add to the above mentioned Echezeaux list is Jacques Prieur. Their rendition is solid, spicy, dark fruited and delicious.

What about Camuzet?

More love for Mongeard Mugneret. Big fan, and the wines are still really reasonable.
Love Forey, ages very well.
Gerard Mugneret makes great Eche, just not enough of it :frowning:

Omitting those now priced in the stratosphere (since the OP asked “for the money”)

Domaine:

Confuron-Cotétidot (Ech)
Duband (Ech)
Forey (Ech- age is a must!)
Grivot (Ech)
Mongeard-Mugneret (GE- age is a must!)

Negoc:

Pascal Marchand (Ech)
Lucien Le Moine (GE & Ech)

I like it very, very much. But I was focussed on the “for the money” qualifier. I also love Liger-Belair’s rendition and DRC’s, but again would leave them out of a “best for the money” discussion.

Cheers,
Blair

Definitely +1 on this one.

Comte Liger Belair, DRC and Rouget are all great (my best recent Echezeaux was a CLB) but obviously that is old news. Georges Noellat, for me, is the revelation of recent years.

M-G Ech is lovely stuff, I’ve been lucky to try a couple bottles. a 1996 Rouget Ech tried in London a month ago was fantastic.

I only sampled from barrel, but based on barrel, Cecile Tremblay knows what she’s doing with Ech as well—I would foretell fine things.

M-M—had an 09 Ech at that same lunch as the 96 Rouget, it definitely wasn’t ready.

No love for Girardin?

Hedonism Wines had the 2009 E Rouget on tap this afternoon. I couldn’t pass a taste given the relevance of this thread.

Holy cow. Any oak influence on this wine is consumed by the shear size and complexity of this wine. It’s so powerful but so fresh. It’s so massive but it floats right across the palate weightlessly.

I’ve clearly underestimated the top of the class in this vineyard. I never imagined the gap between the the M-G’s and C-C’s would be so wide. Shockingly good wine.

I wonder why no one mentions Arnoux, excellent Echezeaux, very elegant, and often cheaper available than the Suchots. 2001 is fantastic at the moment.

Clos Frantin.

Very good Ech. and GE…and well priced.

When summing up the producers who have both GE+E:

DRC
Mongeard-Mugneret
Engel-d´Eugenie
Lamarche
Clos Frantin
Gros F+S

Drouhin?

Additional both Ech and Grands Ech:
Georges Noellat
Lucien LeMoine (if he counts)

Jadot too.

Robert,

George Noellat - yes
Drouhin - yes

J-M Millot
R. Siruge
and a certain Desaunay-Bissey I´ve never heard of …

Jadot is certainly no proprietor, but seems to get for both ACs grapes/wine from somewhere,
same for Le Moine

Gerhard, not proprietors but still producers.
