Well, it’s a bit late to say Mondavi I Block and Spottswoode, so I’ll contribute Blackbird Vineyards Dissonance. Aaron Pott is the winemaker and it 's made with a touch of Semillon.
My favorite is Eisele SB
Riverain SB, you’re welcome.
What an interesting thread and stoked to see SBlanc get some air time here. Thanks everyone for all the positive comments about our wines. It all starts with an incredible site and mother nature has been very kind to white wines for the past few years in Napa.
For Renee and I, the benchmark for Sauv Blanc in the US is DANA (the price is bonkers but to each their own). I don’t necessarily buy it due to the price but have had it many times & multiple vintages and have always thought of it as the pinnacle for the varietal.
Hands down the best QPR out there for Bordeaux Blanc style Sauv Blanc is Lapelle. Maayan (owner/winemaker of Lapelle and also our winemaker for our SB at MOWE) is the master at SBlanc and has his hands in many listed up thread.
When we set out to make SB we tasted nearly every domestic high end SB and came up with the following that really spoke to us -
DANA
LAIL GEORGIA (a little bit more tropical than we like but has everything we love about the varietal)
Melka Mekerra - the 2019 is a WOW wine…!! Perfect balance everything I want in SB.
ADAMVS - Alot like our MOWE. pretty high acid and dances into the tropical notes but doesn’t go full tropical.
Cheers eveyone!
Dustin Mowe
Definitely was one of my favorites before. I would say MOWE is my favorite now.
Dustin, thank you for sharing. I did not know Maayan produced your wines. I stated above that any SB made by Maayan is a go to. My first SB that I had that I liked was the Brilliant Mistake 2015ish by Maayan. It was at this point that I became a believer in US SB.
Have you had Aileron’s SB?
Yes, Maayan is who makes ours. We’ve been friends for years and he is who got me into this style of SB.
I’ve had it and its delicious. Very well done!
Really cool thread. Let me pile on with more love for Mowe. Honestly the best domestic SB I’ve had and the most thought provoking.
Kinsman Eades Aisana, Mowe, and La Pelle are my current favorites.
The 21 is $30 right now on their site with cheap shipping.
KE SB, especially the 23 vintage is very well done and tastes great.
Napa Sauvignon Blancs have really turned in the right direction the past few years.
Tops in my Opinion:
REWA
Plinth
MOWE
DANA
Kinsman Eades
Spottswoode Mary’s Block
Impensata
Tench
Kenzo
Another vote for MOWE. Best napa SB I have had. Really impressive.
The cab is also marvelous. I think theyre going to gain a lot of steam quickly.
This thread is inspiring me to do a lineup of Napa SB to try to evaluate if an impression I had formed based on separate tastings was correct. My impression was that MOWE presented like a meeting-in-the-middle of the Realm Fidelio and the Kinsman Aisana. The MOWE had the energy and verve of the Fidelio without any of the cotton-candy sweetness, and it had the complexity and depth of the Aisana. I loved that balance. I’ve also had the Impensata, Lail, and Arrow and Branch and they’re all fantastic and comparable to the profile of MOWE but in my opinion mowe pulls it off better (for my palate). The one Dana SB I’ve had was the VASO diffusion line (sourced primarily from Hershey, though) which was just massive, concentrated and thick and makes me really intrigued by the main Hershey offering.
The dry stack has been one of my favorites for years, though it has a hazy (unfiltered) quality which makes some skeptical when I serve it (but they are glad I did).
Fidelio is also a great choice.
If you are into this sort of thing (and like the label) - try summer dreams walking on venice beach. A recent additional to my rotation.
Sinegal makes a very good SB. It is definitely more on the rich side, but it is very aromatic and the palate is silky.
+1
MOWE
Fidelio
Tench
Spottswoode
I used to very much enjoy Maze, but we disconnected… searching on-line, are they still producing?
If you ever find yourself in Boulder, CO, give me a holler and I’d be happy to share a bottle!
