Not sure if the same people, but someone out of Indiana uses Koval bourbon barrels with their maple syrup. Delicious. I use it to make a maple Manhattan. Goes well on pancakes too. But you’re right, the flavor profiles are similar. The barrel seems to accentuate those characteristics, hightens them, adds a sense of a kick, and adds some spiciness to it.
