Duty Free

For the most part, for me, it’s “move on, there’s nothing to see here”. I have over 30 years of international travel, and my theory is that somebody figured out that airport terminals had, say, 50-100 thousand people (passengers, consumers) passing through their portals, daily! And, they were captive (for at least a period of time), tired and susceptible. In an “AHA” moment, somebody figured out that they could create a “shopping mall” in an airport, and an new component of retail was created and retained the name “duty free”.
