Las Vegas

I did that years ago—16 breads in a dégustation that the bread guy led me through. Then drank some water and wine and then literally could not eat one single bite of the entire prix fixe meal as my friends laughed at me and the wife scowled. I still get teased more than a decade later. I literally thought my stomach would rupture. The last bread—beet bread—was the best.

Any updates on places with good wine lists that wont kill the wallet? Going to be in Vegas the 18th- 21st and need a rec for Thursday night. Doesnt matter the food type. Bonus if they have a rhone heavy list.

Nicholas – Couple questions to help me help you. On strip or off strip? If off strip, how far are you willing to go? Casual or more formal?

Its just me and one other buddy Thursday as rest of crew doesnt arrive until the following day.

Strip is most ideal but zero issues grabbing a 15-20 minute uber somewhere. The following two nights are more formal dinners so casual is preferred but again not apposed to slapping on a jacket if we need.

TLDR; Very open to any and all options.

If you’re looking for something that’s not going to kill the wallet, I would recommend getting off the Strip.

Downtown has some great options these days… among those 1228 Main (a Wolfgang Puck place), Main St. Provisions or Esther’s are great. Not super extensive wine lists, but decent options. You also have Garagiste nearby if you want to go grab a bottle of something good.

Just off-Strip is also Cleaver, if you’re looking for more of a steakhouse vibe. They usually have pretty good options for wine, but their cocktails are really great.

Over on Spring Mountain are Lamaii (which has a very healthy list), Sparrow & Wolf or – if you feel like going a bit more upscale – Partage.

All of those should be within about a 15-20 minute ride.

On-Strip, I’d recommend taking a look at Bouchon (Venetian) or La Cave (Wynn) as places that might have decent Rhone offerings. It’s still going to be Strip pricing but maybe not quite as crazy as some.

I’m sure others can give you additional recs.

Bank Atcharawan is no longer at Lamaii. His brother, Bon, now runs it.

Bank is opening a new restaurant, Sawaan, on S Decatur next week. I’m planning to go at the end of the month.

I like Harlo, in Summerlin, and will return during the same trip. Big, eclectic list with a few Easter eggs.

Agree with everything Nate mentioned.

My rec would be to grab a bottle at Garagiste and dine at Esther’s. Great housemade pastas. They also will waive the corkage on one bottle if you purchase a bottle off of their list.

Also forgot to mention if you’re looking for a steak, Echo and Rig is a solid steakhouse and they have FREE corkage for one bottle. Brought my dad and one of his favorites last time I was there, Corison '13. Personally, I like going for their butcher’s cuts (stuff you typically don’t see in a restaurant). The bavette is excellent.

If you’re looking for N Rhone on the Strip, Nomad Restaurant and Nomad Bar have been favorites of mine since they opened, although they’ve slipped a bit in the past couple of years IMO. Last time I was there they had Gonon 17 at a reasonable price (sorry if I drank it all, :face_with_hand_over_mouth:).

Thanks for the recs guys, we decided to give Banks new place a shot and messaged to get reservations for next Thursday. Will report back how it was!

Please do. I look forward to reading about it.

Bank and the crew at Sawaan were absolutely amazing.

Without a doubt the best Thai experience of my life and one of the best meals in recent memory, period.

I cannot recommend visiting them enough.

Vic and Anthony’s last night. No frills old school steak house at the Golden Nugget. Brought the NVR and Mouton and pulled the 13 Bichot and 16 Bionic from the list. Shawn the Somm took great care of us and gave us smoking deals on our bottles (the whole list is very well priced to start with and he’ll give deals on top of it)

Will 100% return.

3rd and final dinner in Vegas at Spago. Great food but the staff was pretty underwhelming. The “Somm” was a mid 70s lady who had zero clue what either wine we brought was and refused to waive the $110 in corkage with purchase of bottles from the menu. Asked about a few bottles of white burg and she came back just as confused so we stuck to cocktails and the bottles we brought.

Wildly overpriced wine list (I can’t think of any restaurant I’ve ever been to that’s higher)

Overall we had great food and enjoyed ourselves but I wouldn’t recommend anyone wasting a night there.

I ate at Sawaan on Thursday night. It is located at Bank’s Patio Wine Garden on Decatur. There were only two of us, so we only ate a handful of dishes. As has been our custom, Bank chose and cooked the meal. Highlights were shrimp donuts, pork belly Chada style (I call it that because it was on the menu at Chada way back when and it has remained a favorite), and a couple of other dishes. It was good to see Bank back in the kitchen after a long time managing rather than cooking. Dinner was very good and I look forward to returning in May.

We also returned to Harlo, adjacent to the Red Rock Casino in Summerlin. I prefer it to any meat-centric restaurant on the Strip. Highlights were Snake River Farms Wagyu Ribcap and a big 'ole Flannery New York. Service is excellent. Winelist is huge and expensive, but we brought a bottle of '18 Dirty & Rowdy Evangelho Mourvedre, which never, ever fails to rock any meal it is served with. Finished with every dessert on the menu, which were comped, and a large glass each of 1979 Blandy’s Verdelho. Good spot and worth the drive.

I’m intrigued by Vic & Anthony’s! (and Sawaan sounds like a winner)

I was able to find a table online for Harlo on Saturday, based on your rec. I’m flying in for the super bowl, and it is a lot tougher than I expected to find reservations.
