Haha, my parents bought copious quantities of Paul Masson wines growing up where my mother would then save the carafe. I think I’m now jaded against that shape. I mostly use chemistry containers too.
Just my take… I’d buy decanters if they weren’t so absurdly expensive…
For the most part, I don’t use it to display / look pretty so i only really want it to serve its purpose - give the wine air… Unlike a glass which you constantly hold, touches your mouth, and has a direct impact to wine consumption.
i don’t need $200+ containers when literally erlenmeyer flasks works, and you can pick up a basic crystal decanter for $20 or so. I do have a couple of nice decanters for the rare times i want to ‘display’ it. but it’s so rare as those are generally harder to clean, and i’m more nervous about breaking it.Less than $4/decanter by the case: Acopa 32 oz. Glass Carafe - 12/Case

Maybe I should just sell chemistry flasks on my website haha.
Just replaced the 2 Grassl 1855’s I broke today. I like the discount that Chris gave for previous buyers. These are my go to glasses for all reds. I just need to be more gentle when hand cleaning.

same happened to me this weekend… but wasn’t my fault…
nude stem zero, zieher, rona, zenology, etc, etc. can you say oversaturated niche market?
How is it oversaturated? Are they showing up on flash sites that I am unaware of?
Better market than tire sales, consumers love thin glasses that don’t have a great life expectancy.
Yep.
Appreciate this list. Great value add. Some thoughts…
- Would alphabetize the list
- Would be great to include WB coupon codes if this is a commerce corner thread (which I don’t think it is?)
- Would be cool to have master specs: weights, heights, and photos for glass shape. I find that to be pretty painful to dig up at times.
- It is against your title, but including machine made models would be cool too…
Great ideas. I will work on these. I love your suggestion #3. Maybe we can crowdsource some of these data.
Can anyone explain how they blow glass with the hand? Interesting!
My guess is it is blown (with any technique be it man-blown or machine assisted) and turned and manufactured by hand.
BTW: these hand-made glasses can be very thin, much thinner than machine-made ones and they do indeed give a much better feeling for the wine and tasting experience through the lips…some might say this is esoteric…but it isn’t.

Sometimes they’re called mouth-blown which might be the better way to describe. We have some diagrams on our website that might be helpful to you!

David,
I have to confess that my question was purely rhetoric.

Hopefully this helps. https://www.lehmann-sa.com/en/glass/collection/jamesse-prestige.html
The Sommier series are stunning. Looks like they are only available across the pond though… The sophienwald glasses are pretty darn similar in size/shape.

Ordered from Macy’s earlier this year. Not sure if still available. I have the champagne, red wine and white wine, yes they are dramatic on the tabletop.
How a glass is blown can be seen on our Corp site www.grasslglass.com
the beauty and artistry for making each hand blown glass… that we then break by looking at. lol! (not specifically grassl, just in general)

And, expensive caviar is a rip-off. Not specifically yours, just in general.
There’s Suckling’s 100-pointer from Lalique.
Lalique Wine Glass - JamesSuckling.comSteuben makes hand blown stems. Googling turns up others that don’t fit the modern WB aesthetic.
Incredible.
