Two that are upper Wisconsin, both family friendly, both great:

Old Europe: not for wine, but for family German cooking. A local’s favorite. Authentic and great for family.
2Amys: Already mentioned, our first pick for family dining in DC. Their reserve wine list can have Italian treasures reasonably priced as well.

In Dupont, Pizzeria Paradiso is a classic. Also Bistro du Coin is an old DC staple. Both strike me as family friendly.

+1 on Unconventional Diner. Across the street the best value in the city is the Corduroy bar menu.

Open City is where I meet people for breakfast.

All of the restaurants in the Line hotel are fun.

Tried Unconventional Diner today. Delicious. I had Brussels sprouts with red lettuce, fried eggs and Masala. A little smoked salmon on the side. Fabulous. We needed a DC spot to grab a quick bite. This fits the bill.
