Porter Creek Rose tasted a couple weeks ago in tasting room. Unusual blend of 75% Zin and 25% Carignane. Drank a bottle at dinner that week. Loved it so much, went back and bought 3 more bottles to bring home. It was definitely one of my favorite wines of the entire trip…a rose!
We love Rose here even when the brutal winter weather gets us down into 70 degree high temps.
I’ve had three that I really like so far. 2011 Erste and Neue Lagrein, Pibaleau La Perlette and 2012 Muga Rose. Unfortunately, I can’t buy the first two here in AZ. Those of you who can, snap em up! I agree the 2012 Bieler is not as good as the 2011. The 2011 was our house wine last year and we drank at least 3 1/2 cases over the summer. Damn, it was good! The 2012 is sweeter and finishes less crisply. Many customers disagree with me on this one. The 2012 Campuget is also not up to the 2011. Watered down, weak, thin, yep I agree with the post above on that one too. The Columbo La Greive Bleu is good, but finishes a bit weakly. I like the 2011 Aqueria Tavel. It is a meatier, darker Rose. I had a different experience with the 2012 Whispering Angel. I thought it a dead ringer for a watered down Sauvignon Blanc with some pink added. I’ll try another given the positive comments from above. I’m a fan of the pink sparkler from Scarpetta as well. Lots more to try, the summer is just beginning.
Opened the 2011 Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy Rose Sancerre Terre de Maimbray tonight. It is drinking very well. Smells of honey, stones, some grassiness and flowers. Tastes like it smells. Easy to drink. Crisp. Fresh and fun.

I tasted through a handful of the Birichino (http://www.birichino.com/) wines a couple of weeks ago, and had one of the best California roses I’ve come across. Labeled Vin Gris and about $16 in Virginia for the 2012, I thought it hit it out of the park.
Right now I’m mostly drinking whatever very good 2011 closeouts I’m seeing at my local shop. A lot of last year’s goodness out there at single digit pricing.
It is Rose restocking time. I love them in the summer with a variety of lighter foods.
The TJ Perrin is quite acceptable and for the tariff a deal. I will be on the lookout for Oregon Rose during my July trip to the Rouge and Willamette Valleys.
Locally we have a very limited selection of quality imports. I have my eyes on a French closeout that goes on sale next week for $3.99.
Locally by far the biggest rose selection in town is at Total Wine. I am leary of their selections and so far have not tried any of their offerings. Does anybody have experience with the Rose from TW?
My case buy the last two years has been the Kaella rose’ of Sangiovese from Washington. I also bought quite a bit of Bedrock which is always enjoyable. I bought Baudry & Arnot-Roberts for the first time this year but have not opened them yet. My pleasant surprise last year was the 11 Caves de l’Angevine Rosé d’Anjou- I’m on the lookout for more locally from this producer for this sumer. I’m sure I’ll pick up a few other random bottles I stumble across locally in the near future as well.
Had the 2012 Sinskey Vin Gris again last night.
M. Abood, I would invite you here for a taste off of both the 2011 and the 2012. I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the 2012.
Funny you mention the Bieler. I was also less impressed with this year’s offering. Last year, we went through cases of it. Popped my first '12 and thought it was a bit less refined / elegant, a bit more flabby than the '11. It was tasted along side what will become this year’s “go to” rose - the '12 Triennes - very delicate and well balanced.
2012 Beylesse - my impressions were similar to the Bieler - loved it in prior years, just “like” the 2012.
Tried my first Tempier (2011) and it didn’t “wow” me for the price - a nicely made wine, but not what I’m looking for in a rose. A bit of a meaty character with an undercurrent of something that reminded me of onions. As I said, a nice wine, but my tastes in rose are admittedly fairly one dimensional, favoring light floral delicacy.
Domestically, the Bedrock and Arnot Roberts offerings mentioned by others are terrific, as is the Copain rose. Antica Terra’s 2011 Erratica is also very nice, but in a slightly different style - more of a “pinot light” that probably could use another year in the bottle to round off the edges.
Found out yesterday the 2012 Triennes is inbound. I’ll look forward to trying it. I thought the 2011 quite tasty, but the 2011 Bieler was better for less $$.
I have a Zweigelt Austrian rose’ to try this year. Also have a few leftovers from last year to consume, a Tavel, a couple Barnard Griffin Sangiovese Rose’ from Washington, and I think a Provence rose. I have ordered some Muga Rioja Rosado which I couldn’t find locally. Last year I enjoyed a slightly fizzy Portuguese rose’ but I don’t find that one locally either. I will be up in Raleigh in the next week or so and will look for some rose’ while picking up other wines that I have ordered. One of the Raleigh shops has Belle Glos “Oeil de Perdrix” rose’ from Pinot Noir. Has anyone tried that this year or in previous releases?
We tried the Belle Glos “Oeil de Perdrix” rose’ from Pinot Noir today after work. Nose is reticent, not showing anything. Big fruit on the palate finishing with minimal acidity. One of the things I like best about Rose are the wonderful aromas and this has none. It might compliment spicy food. Too fat and sweet for me.
So far:
'12 la Blaque Coteaux de Pierrevert -provencal cheapie delight
'12 Montenidoli Canaiuolo (this is deeelicious, high toned, airy, mineral finish…)
'12 Mourchon Loubie - great poise for a CdR rose, higher elevation helps…freshy fresh
'12 Corbillieres Touraine - airy, floral, very pure
'12 Von Buhl Pinot Noir rose - quite elegant, even regal sensibility. lovely
'12 Schaefer Frohlich rose of Pinot Noir trocken - its own animal altogether, very very riesling like aroma, “sponti”, very mineral driven profile. This is a complex oddity.
'12 Kunstler rose of Pinot Noir - the best German rose i’ve ever tried. awesome balance of pretty pale red fruits, intense floral qualities, and long salivary mineral finish.
Many more to come…viva ROSE! YEAR ROUND!!!
Drinking Liquid Farm’s 2012 Rose from 95% Mourvèdre and its showing great. Tons of fresh citrus, laced with acidity but also a little bit of roundness from the warm weather Mourvèdre. A beaut.
