Oct 24 - Dueling Auctions (Acker vs HDH)

Understood. I was just thrown by the “buy from them in NY” - this is not a NY thing entirely - it’s just as much an Acker thing. They could charge you the tax rate of your state but they don’t because it’s too much effort for them to track and stay compliant with NY law.

That 71-73 monte bello lot was also nuts. But those are unicorns at this point…so…shrug.

2014 Lafon Meursault Perrieres just went for 1280 a bottle. Last auction price was 500/bottle and available on vinfolio for 600/bottle.

A lot with twice as many bottles hammered at the same price at acker.

When I went on the HDH site, they did not ship to NY. Is there a way of getting the wine?

You just arrange shipping with a carrier.

They don’t ship anywhere themselves. They can refer you to shippers who will pick up on your behalf and get it to you. I just use Domaine Storage, and, while slow, it’s temp controlled the whole way and very reasonably priced at $40/case.

Crazy

This is only a casual observation, but it SEEMS like HDH has less online bidding action than normal. I was kinda hoping simultaneous auctions would mean fewer eyeballs and lower prices, but it seems everyone just put their advance bids in and more lots than normal are hammering without any live bids (but still at or above high estimate, as is common with HDH).

given the above market prices you guys are seeing, if i ever offload my investment spec wines, i know where to send them!

You had big sales on Zachys and Sotheby’s this week too. There’s only so many hours you can spend starting at a computer screen. I’ve done exactly what you’re saying on most lots today.

Mark, just send them your own shipping label. They allow this. I did it previously with my auction wins.

I thought you were telling me that I did and I was trying to figure out “how the hell do you know that” and “wait … did I spend a bunch of money this week already?”

Thankfully, I’ve checked with my sources and I did not - in fact - spend a bunch of money this week already.

0 for 6. seems I ws the 2nd or 3rd highest bidder this auction, vs. the 4th or 5th earlier this year.

Lots of services will pick it up.

Am a bit annoyed to miss out on a couple of Acker lots from this morning due to some work distractions, but picked up the one lot I really wanted from HdH. A bit more than I wanted to pay, but definitely not bad (and certainly below retail).

What are we drinking?

I’m realizing how much I am losing interest in the HDH auctions, now that you can’t make it a long party day with good friends, wine, and food. Waiting to see how stupidly high somebody somewhere will bid up ‘85 Jayer is not particularly interesting, much less is it any fun.

I did not follow the HDH auction, and I did not have time to sit and watch the Acker auction closely start to finish as I normally might, but based on what I observed at Acker- I would agree with you that it seemed like more lots hammered fairly quickly based on absentee bids.

That said, overall things seemed strong- with maybe a slight dip for some of the regular A-listers, but then astonishing prices in certain categories. Coche-Dury sold today for some dizzying sums, and white burg in general seems on fire. And even where some A-list wines softened a bit- they are still far up from over a year ago. It is still very much a bull market for wine.

But what really caught my attention were the Egon Muller lots. One lot of 10 bottles of Kabinett hammered for $5,000- $500 a bottle plus buyer’s premium!! It was a mixed lot of 2009 and 2012- so not older and harder to find bottles (though they have gotten much harder to find in the past 2 years.) Other lots of Kabinett and Spatlese, some with auction bottlings included, were more in the $300-400 range- but that is still really steep compared to even recent retail results. For example, I bought some 1999 Spatlese (a legendary vintage for Muller) late this spring for about $280 per. So to see much more recent vintages selling for more at auction so quickly was quite a surprise.

Egon Muller is leading the way, but in the past 3 years German wines in general are performing better at auction- and starting to show up more often as a result. That is most definitely going to be the new frontier for some epic investment/collector activity. Glad I already have a lifetime supply…

We’ll talk
