Yup, have been to 3 DMV costcos in last several weeks and nothing. Frustrating how much better the CA /WA wine selections seem to be.
au contraire, mon frere!
Funny, got the same answer form the Bevmo employees regarding Napanook while ago…never thought TWM staff can be that undertrained…
Sunnyvale CA today:
2019 d’Issan $45.99
2019 petit smith haut lafitte $28.99
2019 echo de lynch bages $29.99
2014 cristal $299
2018 produttori del barbaresco $37.99
2020 GPL showed up at Kirkland over the weekend. somewhere in the 60’s
Chateau d’Isscount
Irvine spectrum reloaded Leoville Barton and now has Laroque.
#474 (Goleta, CA) had a new bump of 2019 BDX, including:
Leoville Barton $65 (about a case left)
Pavie Macquin $60
Cos d’Estournel $143 (2 bottles left)
Clerc Milon $62 (roughly, I think)
I should have bit on some Branaire Ducru a few weeks back for ~$37 per 750mL. Not making the same mistake again, I grabbed a couple of the Barton and a Pavie Macquin. For the price, I probably should have grabbed more Barton, but I don’t need a ton of Cabernet needing 15+ years to mature. Though I expect they’ll be great when the time is right
The Costco in Dallas at 75 and Churchill has moved on to 2020s, which from a price perspective are not as compelling. The 2019s flew off the shelf there and I didn’t even see some of the higher end bottles even though I am there at least once a week. I suspect there are a small coterie of big-time buyers (hoarders) that clear them out before they reach the shelves. They still have 2016 Belair Monange for $200+ though, which has been sitting there for a couple of years now. I have never seen marked down BDX at that Costco.
That’s where my previous picture was from. I grabbed a few 2020 d’Issans and some '18 Cantemerle today, but I never saw the influx of these 2019 2-5th growths in that Costco.
There’s also some Trotanoy, a 2012 Vega Sicilia Unico, and a couple of higher end Napa bottles, but they are way above reasonable prices.
I got here when they opened today but they’re all out of LB, said no more is coming.
Some goodies though.
I am curious about two things.
Why they are selling 2019 under market. Not only under market, but below what I was buying them, so at or very close to cost?
How much stock do they have left?
They’re simply following their policy of taking a (set) small margin.
Mark, Costco purchased EP, and limits its markup to 14 or 15%, as with all other merchandise. At least, that is my understanding. Why are they selling now? I would guess their containers came in the last several months.
Some analysts who follow Costco, think that the membership fees are nearly all pure profit, and that’s what they aim to maximize.
======
One of our family members revealed (on Mother’s Day no less) that they had let their membership lapse, which deliberately cast a pall on what should have been a day of belonging, community, and consumption of Costco treats.
No Bordeaux in Naples FL
Sorry for your loss.
You were not there when they opened because I got the last three this morning. Sorry, Chris.
I also hit the Huntington Beach, Garden Grove and Fountain Valley stores today.
- GG has zero Bordeaux that I could see. They only have one section of wooden wine bins at all.
- HB had limited selections of the basics seen at the other places.
- FV has the most of the four stores I went to today. Lots of '18 and '19. Its also spread out among the bins a lot. You have to check all around.
The prize here was '19 Pavie-Macquin at $60. They had a little over a case left at 7:30pm after I took four.
I went back to my Costco and bough a couple more LB, still about a case left. The $65 price is literally once in a lifetime, at least in the forward looking direction. Others in the area had the opportunity to clean it out today . . . . maybe I’ll keep going back for 2 a day until it’s gone, yes that’s a threat folks
The Pavie-Macquin supply remains very healthy, probably around 2 cases in a bin. I am tempted. Though the Laroque sounds good, wish they had that locally.
