They might now? (as referenced above). Had good results with their “handoff” to RareStorage for shipping to PA (though rates are a bit high, it at least provides an option)
In some ways, this goes to show how little the SBC continues to be known by the masses. If Jim was making wine in Sonoma, these prices would most likely be 3-4X or more . . .
I also think some producers like Arcadian and Au Bon Climat were sort of pre-hype. Wineries with more flash and social media buzz came along later making wines in those styles, and they and their pricing cashed in on the model that the pioneers had set.
Kind of like Green Day playing in football stadiums while The Descendants play in clubs in front of a few hundred people for a $20 ticket. But then it’s awesome you get to see The Descendants in that way.
I bought five bottles: 01, 02 and 07 Sanford & Benedict pinot, 05 Bien Nacido pinot, 97 Sanford & Benedict chardonnay (a flyer, what the hell).
Seems to be a partial list. When I emailed them about shipping to MI this was their response:
Currently, we’re not able to have RareStorage ship to Michigan. We’re hopeful that at some point in the future, they will be able to assist with a shipment of alcohol to the state, and that’s why it’s not on the “blocked” list of states.
The list of blocked states are the states we are next to certain that we’ll never be able to ship to.
We’re sorry we don’t have any options for shipping to Michigan at this time.
Good move Chris. I was going to send you an alert on this offer, but see you picked it up. I’ve got about 300 bottles of various wines made by Jim; so, let’s set up a tasting perhaps.
Grabbed a few chards (Blanche Nuits and Sanford & Benedict) from the late 90s/early-mid 00s and a couple pinots from the mid 00s. Given provenance and price the risk on Chardonnay that old seemed acceptable particularly given the strong testimonials from Blake and others as to their longevity.
That prompted me to listen to the old IDTT ep with Jim Clendenen, and Levi Dalton commented on how ageworthy the chards were, specifically noting how he’d enjoyed early 90s bottles recently. The show was recorded in 2013 or so, so that made me feel a little better that I might be in for something good with these bottles.
I just called K&L and asked them about shipping to NJ via Rarestorage, and the guy at K&L said they do not ship to NJ (he said he had just gotten the updated list of shipping states from RS yesterday). I just emailed RS to get a clarification.
When Jim died, he had 5000 cases of wine in his cellar. A friend and i asked him if maybe he needed some help, ie we will will drink it,but he felt he did not have enough!!
Four thousand of these cases were wines he made…The rest he had bought.
I think the task of selling all this stuff overwhelmed everyone so eventually somebody from K and L spent two days tasting. If you love the flavor of mature chardonnay this is a bonanza. Tired of high prices for red Burgundy…feast on this.
