Lived in DC for fourteen years and can’t really add anything else to the sentiments about C-W, Schneider’s and Macarthur’s. Used to have an apartment in the Kalorama area, however, and frequented Dupont Circle Wine & Liquor a fair bit. Surprisingly good/interesting selection for such an extremely small space. Guys there are pretty sharp and very friendly, and the prices were pretty competitive with other wine shops in the DC area.
Many thanks. As it was so close to where I was staying, and given how little spare time I had, I only made it to Calvert Woodley. The selection wasn’t bad and the service seemed very good. I got hold of some Az. Ag. COS which I’ve been looking for without success and some vintage Gimmonet
Back to the D.C. area again, this time staying at the Crystal City Hilton in Arlington. Doesn’t look like there are any wine stores close to the hotel according to google, but does anybody here have any suggestions for something within walking distance or a short cab ride? (I expect to have very little spare time on this trip)
Nothing in walking distance. Closest by cab is likely Schneider’s of Capital Hill. Three blocks from Union Station. An odd little place. Planet Wine in Delray has a mediocre selection, but it is effectively the wine list for the attached restaurant, Evening Star, which is very nice. Also a cab ride but a relatively short one. And a world-class cheese shop and a frozen custard place both 2 blocks away
Costco is nearby . . . yes, I know not a wine shop, but you never know what gems may be on offer. Less than a 1 mile walk - although not the most scenic trip.
Nothing within a “short” cab ride, but Both Weygandt and Schneiders are on the red line. Just get on at the Crystal Cty Metro, yellow line into the city and go towards Glenmont for Schneiders (get off at Union Station) or towards Shady Grove for Weygandt (get off at Cleveland Park). You can check both their websites.
I rarely go there any more, and things may have changed, but I have never seen anything remotely appealing at that store (to my great frustration). Great deals on Yellow Tail and Ravenswood
Eh, not so fast. This is a pretty common construction on this board and others, actually (quoting someone, adding or replacing an adjective to be funny/critical – saying “fixed that for you” is a recognizable cue that the text has been altered).
You have to get on Arrowine’s email list for the deals but if you’re in the store and see something that was on an email, you can usually get that price. I just picked up a couple of cases of the delicious 2012 Clos du Mont Olivet Cotes du Rhone V.V. for $12.99 case price. Terrific QPR.
The only other time I’ve seen it used, the victim complained immediately, as would I. I’d have to disagree with you; it’s a bad idea to directly change a person’s speech in writing, even as a joke.
The original text is left unchanged, it’s only in the subsequent quotation that it’s altered, and, as noted, it’s done in such a way that everyone is in on the joke.
