Silvaner, a Lovely yet Unloved Spring Wine, Needs Friends~NYTimes

Silvaner is a white grape of German origin

I always thought Silvaner is Austrian origin. It is being listed as one of their autochthonous varietals. Being a crossing between Traminer and Oesterreich Weiss (Austrian White) it lost popularity over the years. Since it is a rather finicky grape in the vineyard most of the Silvaner plantings have been replaced with the more hardy and versatile Gruner Veltliner, which also offered a more preferred dryer style. There is very little left in the country. In Germany on the other hand it represented at one point 1/3 of the entire country’s crop. So I can see that one would think that it would originate from there.
