SMWS --- what do you think of them?

I’m not much of an ageist, but I do have a general bias that I won’t apply in any given particular case. Heck, I adore Laphroaig’s 10 yo C.S… I prefer Lagavulin’s 12 yo to their 16 yo (but who doesn’t?). yadda yadda yadda …

Seeing that you were shown 8 malts, I would expect the SMWS to present one or two in the 15 - 20 yo range, and one in the 23 - 30 yo range. I’d be a little disappointed if more than 2 were less than 10 yo. But, to your point, at the end of the day, if they’re good, they’re good, and that’s all that really matters.

Tried a couple today. One a 13 year old glen grant speyside. Tasted a bit like a macallan fine oak, and was ok. The other a 10 year old Caol Ila that made up for it. I am a bit of a sucker for this style admittedly. Also tried a four year old texas malt whisky with a double oak aging. Balcones I think. Definite bourbon feel with the heavy oak and without some of the sweetness of some bourbons. Decent and interesting, again not great.
