It’s great, for certain, but the bigger difference is that it’s barrel proof, unlike the SB and SiB, which are released at a fixed proof.
EH Taylor BP is really good, probably best in lineup for me. I still have a couple Elmer 100th Anny around…need a reason to open them.
Morgan Ranch and Flannery are compelling reasons the next time you’re back in town
Y’all keep threatening that.
I bought another bottle of Old Ezra 7…man, I really dig this Bourbon. Anyone else have this recently?
The person in front of me got the last BYO opening. So close!
Stumbled onto a bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel this weekend at $89.99 (pre-taxes, etc.), so I grabbed it. That’s a lot for a bottle, but a lot less than I’ve seen it for (when I see it, which is rare).
That is a score! Kudos to the the retailer too…
And to your earlier point I really like the Ezra 7 too, I have a Few from when it first came out, but it’s up to ~$75 out the door here now. (I think it started about $20 less)
Being that it was a small grocery store in a small town that likely doesn’t sell much of it, the 20-somthing cashier, after scanning it, loudly exclaimed, “Whoooooooa! That must be a good bottle of wine!”
Had an old friend by so I had to dig deep(er) .
I dunno the nose on this blows me away but it’s just so harsh on the back side.
While digging I also found an Old Overholt Rye 11yr. Has anybody had that one? Bought it a few years ago and haven’t popped it.
The latest Shenks and Bomberger’s release are fire. I don’t know why they don’t get more hype. We’re approaching pappy/BTAC season so I get that that is the focus, but don’t sleep on Shenk’s and Bomberger’s.
Pricy + allocated
They get plenty of hype from bourbon aficionados, given they’re Michters allocated releases.
Anyone tried any of the Old Potrero bottlings?
I always try and get a Bomberger’s, but never much cared for the Shenks.
I tried their line-up a couple of years back at the SF Whiskey FOG event (I think that’s what it was called). I enjoyed the line at the price point (they had a great malted rye), but don’t know that I’d go out of my way to grab a bottle given the horde of competition in the $50-$80/bottle price point.
Thanks. What aged rye would you go to in that price range? Available, that is lol.
I’d go Willett rye, which is a 4 year bottle iirc, and prices around $60-$70. I think WFE is one of the better ryes in that class, with the JD Single Barrel Barrel Strength being fantastic and at the same price point, but unobtanium.
Dark horse imho is anything from Nashville Barrel Company with age, which are basically high-end MGP selections. I’ve had some phenomenal bottles from them, but mostly in the $100-$120 range. You can order direct and have it shipped.
Would also ping @Kris_Patten for feedback, as he sees left to right across inventory.
I would rec the Knob Creek 10 year rye which is just debuting this year with a rather large bottle count and really competitive pricing.
JD SB BP Rye is also stellar as mentioned and will be super easy to find in the near future. Already here in the Southeast this bottle sits on the shelves by the case.
Another interesting one that I have not had the chance to try yet - New Riff came out with an 8 year rye this year that is gaining good reviews.
For Rye, I look at it in levels and should all be in retail.
Don’t mind mixing: Rittenhouse, Old Fo 100, Woodford, JD Bonded 100
Mix, but only Old Fashioned: Pikesville, Sagamore Cask Srength, JDSB
Could mix…with an ice cube: Peerless Double Oak, Sagamore Double Oak, JDSBBP, Whistelpig 12 Sauternes Cask, New Riff 6 Malted Rye
There are others that are good that just don’t make it in rotation: Dickel, WT101, Rare Breed, Knob Creek.
Funny how 10 yesrs ago it would basically be Sazerac and Rittenhouse. Rittenhouse still makes the rotation, Sazerac isn’t spicy enough to justify MSRP for me and the drinks it goes into.
