TN: 2009 Cal Cabs so bad, they move me to doggerel

What I’m also struggling to understand is how some of you can also side with the “it’s offensive camp” and then also go post pictures of a pirate in a porno wearing spandex with his dick showing like it’s great comedy.

John, There are many people I have met who do not post here because of a certain crassness and school yard-ness that can be present from time to time. Some for reasons I never thought of until I heard them. One in particular is a friend who is a minister. His knowledge of wine could only be considered a great addition to this forum. Sadly he does not post more than once or twice a year, and it’s usually in response to some other thread, with as few words as possible. Believe you-me, I am the last to call the PC police into play, but this is actually more than just being PC, it’s just the right thing. Do you know how many women avoid this forum? I don’t know about you, but I for one wish we had more women posting in general. I also agree as to the avatars in use. Some tend to be very provocative and over the top. I could care less mind you, but it’s not just about me.

This topic has come up before, many times. nothing ever really changes unless we change it, no?

Exit-soapbox.

Mike – You said it well.

Do you never consider whether your words are offensive? Would you tell that joke at the dinner table? With your parents? Your boss?

I trust not because you recognize that some things are inappropriate in particular settings. For some us (I take it Mike and David are with me on this one), one of the appeals of WB is that it’s pretty civilized. Personally, I cringe when the locker room humor creeps in because I think it does drive women away.

I, for one, didn’t know the history of the joke, which seems to have made David’s comment witty to some. The fact that a stand-up comic told it doesn’t make it any less crass in my book. And if the original was so famous and funny, it would have been wittier to allude to it more obliquely.

Footnote: I know and like David, but I told him privately I thought this was offensive.

To follow on this, I assumed the joke was common knowledge - i.e., the reference brings to mind Bea Arthur’s response. I don’t think its offensive as a pop cultural reference (and I do think that there’s some burden on those who are going to cry “offensive” to make sure they’re just not missing the reference); on the other hand, in isolation it’s basically a lame dick joke, which I’d like to think I’m better than (references to unforunate last names at the tasting table aside).

I didn’t see the comment that was edited out, but it was worse than the Rodney Strong tasting note about a pederast using the wine to arouse a young boy?

Hear hear, good sir.

As one who possesses delicate feminine sensibilities and a general unawareness of the wider, more vulgar world in which we sadly must exist, I find myself much obliged to the noble patrimony for seeking to protect these child-like ears from such coarse discourse. For otherwise, I surely would have collapsed upon my frilly fainting couch, shocked that such vulgar utterances be not confined to the yard or such clubs where women and children are graciously and rightfully prohibited.

No, it was not.

Was it worse than the one where the nose was described as being rancid like Betty White’s stinky strap-on?

Btw, as a Greek I take offense to that whole “hollow economy” thing. Just sayin.

And as a Bostonian, I take offense to the “redolent of marathon feet” descriptor. I mean, really man, much too soon.

Maybe this thread just needs to go away…

I actually am truly offended by the term “midget convention”.

I reject someone named Richard Malloy claiming to be Greek. Now, if Nicos Neocleous wants be offended, I’ll listen.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Ahem…offensive. Name was originally spelled Bücher. [snort.gif]

I was adopted! My birthname is Ντόγκας Τσιουτσιούπουλου

Ahem… putting “Cal” and “raisin” in the same sentence? Don’t think for a second I’m oblivious to that dog whistle.

In terms of the wines tasted the line up is hardly representative (except for Mondavi Reserve) so I would draw no conclusions about the vintage based on this tasting. Also, had they poured the Chappellet Prichard Vineyard (underrated IMO) that would have been interesting.

The A-R Follom Ranch I expect will be special, but it needs more time in the bottle.

I wouldn’t have gotten that creative with the derogative phrasing unless I had a more representative group of wines to disparage.

Landreth is kraut as well…
