Alfred Gratien Brut Rose Campagne NV
We drank this at the kitchen table before our Thanksgiving meal at the dining room table. Over nibbles and conversation with our son and his lady friend as guests. This wine was good company also. Assertive at the first sip, sure of itself that it had something to say and was going to say it. A lot going on in the fruit and forest realm. Spice from the Pinot Meunier. Chardonnay is the dominant grape I believe, but you could have fooled me. Pinot Noir is in this wine, Frank, but it might be as low as 20%. (~$50)
Cheers.
Remember when earlier in this thread I said that I don’t like Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. This is me getting my comeuppance.
First off this wine smells beautiful. Red fruit, vivid rose aromas, and just a little bit of earthiness had me forgetting to even taste it. That said it taste good too, but there’s no way for it to measure up to the beguiling aromatics. The fruit and structure are well balanced for even more development, but I am very happy that I opened this now. It smells sooooo goooood!
Thank you Frank for doing this again.
We had a simple Thanksgiving dinner. My Hawaiian based family made SPAM Musubi the main dish. I stuck to the stuffed mushrooms and gourmet mac-n-cheese made by my granddaughter. The mix made for a difficult wine choice but just having visited Kemmeter Wines in the Finger Lakes the choice was a pinot noir rosé.
2023 Kemmeter Sonero : Light aroma of strawberry upon opening. On the palate the acidity and strawberries hit upfront for this low alcohol refreshing wine. On the mid-palate sour cherries and a unknown spice note join the strawberries and acid. Relatively simple but refreshing wine that is well made by Johannes Reinhardt at Kemmeter. Definitely, worth the visit to taste his wines and hear his viticulture and winemaking philosophy. Will visit again when we have more time. Cheers everyone.
Gary, the blue painter’s tape around the trim keeps it real. Thanks for posting this photo. Cheers.
Goodfellow 2014 Bishop creek PN. Wife loves it and paradoxically suggests we gift a remaining bottle to her brother. Highly unlikely I’ll be able to locate a bottle, just saying. These aged Goodfellow’s reward the patience.
2005 Jadot Clos des Ursules. Worth the wait on this. In a really nice place. Red fruit with some earthy elements. Lengthy finish. Fully mature but definitely life left. Nice, classic Burgundy.
Almost forgot about this thread . . . .
2015 Patricia Green Cellars Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir. Decanted for an hour. Really wonderful wine, with plenty of perfumed nose and even bigger on the palate, and a nice long finish to it.
Thanks for doing this, Frank!
Jean Vesselle Oeil de Pedrix
A perennial favorite for regular events. Disgorged September 1st, 2024. Good effervescence, light pink color, tastes of blood orange, mostly dry.
2021 Cru Pinot Noir SLH Smith & Lindley
Brought by my brother for one of our post-Thanksgiving meals. Blackberry/blueberry fruit, a hint of bramble, slight oxidation (I think), moderate concentration, good acidity, slight tannins. Maybe no great complexity or depth, but for a bottle to sip and enjoy with family, I genuinely enjoyed this.
I was going to call you out
2004 Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne Romanee. Figured it was worth taking a shot. Even it sucked something was to be gained. And…it’s good. It definitely has an earthy/mossy background but it has tons of sweet red fruit and bright acidity. Good texture as well. Considering the vintage, age and it’s more humble nature this is over-performing in spades. It’s, dare I say, actually sort of delicious and will slay with Day 2 Thanksgiving meal.
I already did a photo of me so I tried to incorporate the outside latch bush that I filled with Christmas lights today. Not a great photo of it but you get the picture. Festive!!
I’ve had a lot of 2004 M-G wines, and they are not bad at all. Certainly better than most from that year.
Coming out of a posting hiatus for Frankie’s cause.
2007 Matello Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
Some people dismissed and have continued to dismiss this vintage, but Marcus Goodfellow made a damn fine bottle of “simple” wine with this. Second bottle in a month and the second homerun. Fully mature, but it held up just fine over the course of about four hours being opening. It has the seductive aromatics like one gets on walking past a flower so alluring that you feel compelled to turn around and smell it again. And here is the slightly scary thing: I am currently drinking an absolutely delicious 1964 Marcarini Barolo and yet I enjoyed the Matello every bit as much even though it was a sixth of the price. Marcus sold this as part of his Mystery six pack recently for simply not enough money. Very generous of him.
Would we call this label Art Deco?
Adding the dinner photo with lamb shank in pomogranate sauce over garlic mash potatoes. And yes, that is a sheep toy in the back ground. Sick, I know.
Ha! You caught that. We went up to our kids house in Worcester. They are getting ready to paint the room again. Good catch Jim!
These bottles were kindly brought by Thanksgiving guests (and left behind).
2012 Scherrer Sonoma Coast Platte Vineyard Pinot Noir
@Chris_Seiber brought this.
Lots of nice berry / cranberry flavors, with a pinch of cinnamon towards the midpalate. Good acidity, and comes across as lower alcohol than what is stated on the label (14.2)
2022 Daou Edna Valley Reserve Pinot Noir
A bolder version of PN, with more heft and than the Scherrer above. It’s also younger, so the oak was a bit more prominent. It went well with the dishes that had some sweetness (chestnut stuffing, corn pudding and cranberry relish).
Opened this yesterday while watching the Raiders meltdown and the Sharks sudden offensive explosion on two TVs while getting ready to host my wife’s family for dinner. The 2019 Goodfellow Whistling Ridge Pinot. We gave it a few hours of air. The nose was really nice…floral notes, along with dried herbs and spices. Light ruby color, and a lot of red fruits on the palate, mostly strawberry and cranberry. Better with food than on its own. Held up well with the turkey and red meats that we served. We have some left to try today, and looking forward to it. Well done, @Marcus_Goodfellow
Jamie Kutch introduced me to my first One Acre. It was love at first sip, extraordinary wine at times (I’ve been lucky to have a few more since then).
Burgundy & Oregon collide over a Mardis Gras soup. We were fortunate to have our kids from Wilmington, MA come down for the weekend. It was a delight that our son volunteered to make dinner…he’s actually a very good cook. We had a an older Burgundy to share and they brought a recent vintage Oregon pinot noir.
2022 Drouhin Rose Rock Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills Oregon -
Faint floral cherry nose. Brilliant garnet color with good transparency through the glass. The first sip was softer than I expected as the acid seems to play a supporting role. Medium body wine with straightforward cherry flavors dominating. Good length on the palate. Relatively simple easy drinking pinot noir at this stage. Not sure how this one will develop through time.
2005 Jadot Beaune 1’er Clos des Coucheraux -
Purchased on release. Cork was in perfect shape. I detected a light forest barnyard aroma in the glass. Color is a deeper intensity red with slight blue tint. In the mouth the acid is prominent upfront. Drying tannins build with the sour cherry and blackberry flavors. Finish is moderate length. Nice wine but not spectacular. I do have a couple more cellared so I can check later. My only reservation about long term storage on this wine is that I don’t believe it has the fruit intensity to improve as the acids and tannins recede. Hope I get surprised in the future.
On night 2 the acid and tanning tamed down a bit and the flavors took on an appealing leather note with the fruit.
2012 Scherrer Platt with a repeat performance!
