Why do old Bordeaux's not follow vintage charts

It’s too bad that Alan doesn’t like old wines. I’m sure you could be of great service to him if he did.

I recently had one bad 1978, so the following day pulled out another which was excellent. Both had good color; hard to know what went wrong with the first bottle.

Mark - are there producers you’ve observed more variability with - as wines age - than others? It seems like some of this might be related to the quality control around bottling, corks, seals etc. Maybe if one has kept solid cases over decades it becomes more clear which estates are less consistent in that dimension, which isn’t going to be observable on release.
