Wine at Restaurants?

When we lived in Manhattan and ate at some of the best restaurants, I NEVER saw anyone BYO. When we moved to the LA area, I was delighted that BYO was so popular and mostly reasonable at most good restaurants. I look at a restaurant’s menu online and decide what i am having, then choose an appropriate wine to bring along.

I am always glad to pay a $15 to $25 corkage fee in Minneapolis. Sometimes they wave it if I offer the server a glass but wine geeks don’t need help and the markups are ridiculous especially at the corporate steak houses in town.

Marlene - most places permit it for a fee, including high end places. Some have bottle limits, so call in advance, but 8 times out of 10 I have no issue in NYC. Check out the BYO forum for lots of places and their corkage fees.

Ordering wine at a restaurant is like ordering a beer at a baseball game or eating out of the mini bar. Overpriced. Often not interesting or good. But it can add to the experience nevertheless. You just have to look at it not as buying a $20 wine for $50, but rather as spending $50 to marginally add to your experience. I think wine people actually get too hung up on this because we spend so much time and energy searching for bargains and cherrypicking wines we want that it’s maddening to overpay for stuff we’re not that interested in. But taking a step back, sometimes it’s worth it to just stick your head in the sand and drink some overpriced wine that goes will with the food. That said, I often go the craft beer route.
