You’ll have until at least Inauguration Day to buy and import your soon-to-be contraband. No need to rush.
I can barely afford the stuff I like already. Oh well, we’ll always have Oregon.
Heck, producers in Bordeaux and Burgundy have done more harm to their market than any U.S. tariff could. Taking huge price increases (far more than 10%) year over year is what will kill the Bordeaux and Burgundy market, not some possible-but-not-likely 10% tariff.
I don’t think there is a lot to be concerned about at this point.
I’d rather not say more than that since it will be about politics, but from what I’ve pieced together, I don’t think this is a given.
Just had a bunch of Total Wine futures get charged this morning. Looks like they may be rushing those to the US
Inauguration day isn’t that far away and wine isn’t a frictionless market; shipping takes time. While I don’t pretend to know what will happen with tariffs, I started some things moving already, as I see no downside.
I think the other problem is the possibility of another dock strike in January.
Many customers also don’t get to control when futures come ashore. Since the cost is passed directly to them and they already have paid for the wine, there is no incentive for the retailer to take delivery sooner than they are ready.
For the wines they plan on retailing, that is another story.
Were these 2022s or 2021s?
Another reason I started things moving already and have told others I’m going to start moving things this week. Especially with the dollar moving in the right direction post election.
Mine are not futures, but I appreciate the point.
When has a politician ever kept a campaign promise?
Question: The settlement of the plane subsidies in July 2021 called for a 5 year moratorium on the tariffs on European wines.
Is that something that a new administration can abrogate, or is this locked in through July 2026?
I don’t know the answer but that does sound promising for wine, at least through July 2026. Thank you for raising that.
All 2022.
my 21s from wine dot com shipped Monday or yesterday. Not sure I ordered any 21 futures from TW but if I did I had already paid them.
The short answer to your question is: yes. Whether they choose to do so is another matter.
Will not be pushed to buy more wine. Have too much wine already. It would give me an excuse to feel better about not buying more wine.
Helps that BDX24’ is not a good vintage. No pressure to buy anything next EP.
Agree I am still buying 2023s given decent QPR, however 2024 for sure I would stay away, I saw the health of the grapes prior to harvest and for sure it will not be easy, better vintages currently available.
Doubtful. You are about to see a huge wave of 2022s hit US shores. My first batch arrive at the beginning of December. I’ll have all of mine on US soil by February.
