A retailer than has gone way down hill. I bought into their little subscription model for free shipping just as the decline occurred and never found a single thing I wanted enough, even with free shipping! Oh well

Not getting that Gary owns any part of Wine Library. As President, he appears to be an employee.

I'm sure that as President, Gary V is a salaried employee of Wine Library. I have never heard that he and his family are not the owners. One does not preclude the other.

On further research (GaryV.com) it would appear that he grew Wine Library from his father’s liquor store. Not sure if hype or if true.

Yeah...Gary's father is Sasha V. In the 90's I spent three years selling wine wholesale in Northern Jersey and Sasha (Shoppers Discount Liquors) was one of my top accounts. I recall vividly when the young Gary V. entered the picture. He was just learning wine and as I recall was tasked with ordering beer for his father's store. Gary always came across with great enthusiasm, but with limited wine knowledge or interest. But he never missed an opportunity to taste and expand his knowledge base, even when very young. He was working in his father's store long before he was 21.

100% true. His father's store was part of a consortium. They pooled their purchases to get better deals. Gary V started while in high school and eventually convinced his father to let him handle the wine. He was already making some crazy money trading baseball cards in school and figured that wine buyers were similar. He got the family to pull out of the consortium and go its own way. They were one of the first big users of the internet to sell wine - remember that there wasn't great bandwidth at the time so nobody was streaming videos yet. Turned the store into a monster and when it became feasible, he started WLTV and turned that into a phenomenon. They used to turn over amazing amounts of wine, buying it by the pallet if he liked it. To his credit, he learned a lot about wine in the process and while selling seemed to come naturally to him, he never assumed he knew everything. Dad still owns the place and Gary has plenty of other things going on these days.

As far as the store going downhill, that's because Gary is not involved full time. They're still doing OK. He's a hustler to be sure, but he knows it and I've never heard anything really negative about his ethics. He's OK in my book, and although I was never a fan of the schtick, I admired it.

Gary was also an enthusiastic wine board participant in those days (WCWN for sure, perhaps others). He was even a member of our WCWN Fantasy Baseball League (still going strong, btw) for a couple of weeks before he figured out that he didn't have nearly the time and he yielded his spot to another. To think we all knew him when...

And brilliantly. When I did these sorts of things, I once asked him about a wine of ours that he had totally slammed on WLTV.

"Yeah," he said. "But how much of it did I sell?"

And that was true. Everyone wanted to try a wine that he said he wasn't any good and that embodied everything he disliked.

You have to admire a guy like that. He's fun.

Gary V came to a couple of off-lines in NJ organized by the old Prodigy/Squires group. He looked like and had the energy and excitement of a 12 year old boy that just found out he’d won tickets to the Super Bowl with his beloved Jets playing. Very charismatic as well.

Those were some fun off-lines back in the day. In a room full of personalities Gary V and his boundless energy and enthusiasm were front and center. His success is not at all surprising.

To borrow that, I would say "I don't know of many more skilled."

If you haven't followed him besides his Wine Library / WLTV days, that is a tiny % of what he has accomplished in the last 15 yrs.

Though Gary has a massive list of clients - Fortune 500 cos, sports teams, celebs, etc (and 600?+ employees & offices around the world)- It is his love and willingness to help everyday people, people that need a lift, kids getting out of school, that makes him a legend in my book.

I don't always feel his delivery, but I always respect the message.

Plus -- Watching him speak back in 08 gave me the courage and motivation to get in the wine business. [cheers.gif]

Well CNN article stated today that he is worth $200M. Not bad for the old sniffy sniff. Went on a 2009 cruise with him and about 75 other folks. We had a fun time even though the cruise line sucked. Who knew Italians couldn't run a cruise line and/or cook good food on a ship? I just wish that he had stuck to wine more but a guy has to make a buck if they want to buy the Jets though I have no idea why anyone would want to own the Jets.

I've been a member on and off. I thought it was a good deal at $55 (tax and shipping included)... at $69 now, I'm not so sure. Some of the wines were a steal, some were not worth anywhere near their original retail value-- you could see why they ended up being steeply discounted. It was fun to be a part of, but ultimately I found there were too many new-world fruit bombs, which are not my thing. Saw that January's pack was a Gardet NV Champagne, an Oregon pinot from a winery I'd never heard of (Dois Irmaos), and a Washington state blend.

I remember watching WLTV videos back in college in ~2008-2010. As a college student, I enjoyed wine (read: drank Carlo Rossi or J. Lohr, if I was feeling rich) but his videos are what got me to start really tasting and thinking. I would guess I am not alone in being sparked by his enthusiasm and unpretentiousness.

While I can't stand his self-promotional schtick now, I really do admire his hustle and he's earned what he's built for himself.

Gary's Empathy wines, not even a year old, sold to Constellation. Dude just prints money, wow.
Sold his restaurant reservation system to AMEX last year too.
Oh damn, HE was behind Resy?? Amazing
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resy
Resy was co-founded in 2014 by Ben Leventhal, co-founder of Eater.com, Michael Montero, co-founder and former CTO of CrowdTwist, and social-media entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk.[6] In January 2017 the company raised $13 million from Airbnb, First Data Corporation and earlier investors RSE Ventures and Lerer Hippeau Ventures.[7] In April 2018, Resy enabled participating restaurants to list their properties on Airbnb through Resy’s booking system and also acquired ClubKviar, a restaurant-booking platform in Spain.[8]

In 2018, Resy acquired its competitor, Reserve, a reservation app launched by Uber co-founder Garrett Camp’s incubator, Expa.[9] In 2019, American Express acquired Resy and integrated it into its own mobile app as an offering for some rewards card members.[10] As of 2019, Resy handles 2.6 million diners per week.[11]

Ah, but of course.

Thankfully, we won't need to worry about that. GaryV was born in Belarus.

Hey everyone! Gary's partner in Empathy Wines here. As a long-time Berserkers member (more lurking than engaging), I am beyond thankful to this community. I've learned a ton about the industry, and fine wine in general, by reading and participating on these forums. And I've made lots of online-to-offline friendships with lots of you. Appreciate the support and kind words (and I'm sending a wink-and-a-smile to the skeptics, haha)

Has anyone tired these wines? Seems like Constellation tries to buy everything.
