SF Offline Feb 18 @ Zazie (no corkage)

#1 Post by joeduncan » January 23rd, 2020, 1:28 pm

Looks like a plan to do this on Tuesday Feb 18 @ Zazie (no corkage) @ 7:30pm.

We're going to stay loose with theme. Vague suggestions of Chard, Syrah, and Nebbiolo. More importantly though, bring something you know you want to share (rather than going way outside your wheelhouse). Go ahead and post bottles in the thread if you know what you're going to bring and that can help others find things that might be complementary.

Looking forward to this!

Attendees (max 9):
- Joe D + Mark (confirmed, 2007 Clos Saron Heart of Stone Syrah + 2012 Gramercy Cellars The Deuce Syrah + bonus 2014 Laherte Frères Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Les Grandes Crayeres)
- Andy K + wife (confirmed, 1998 Jaboulet La Chapelle + 2007 Hirtzberger Riesling Hochrain)
- Craig G + Howard (confirmed, 1999 Jaboulet La Chapelle + Aubert Chard)
- Rich F (confirmed, 1997 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier)
- Stephen C (confirmed, 2010 Rostaing La Landonne)
- Brendan B (confirmed, 1995 Robert Ampeau & Fils Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce-sous-le-Bois + bonus Champagne)

Waitlist:
- Linda B
- Cindy W
- Leonard M

Good suggestion. I remember eating brunch there a few times when I lived in SF, but don't know if I ever had dinner. I also appreciate that they are explicitly and literally no-tips-expected. So menu price is menu price.

Have you done a berserkers dinner there? Any idea if they're comfortable with a large number of bottles?

Edit: Seems like their website addresses this clearly:
Tuesday Nights- No Corkage Night

Every Tuesday night, we encourage you to gather friends and meet up at Zazie for dinner with as many bottles of wine as you can gracefully handle. This is a great chance to pop open those bottles you've been meaning to share, or just have a frugal fun night. Our $43 three course pre-fixe dinner includes service, so send out the group text and meet up in person, just like the old days!
So, this sounds like a pretty good starting plan.

Tuesday night Feb 18th, Zazie, no corkage.

Those of you who can make it, please start chiming in with preferences on theme.

Yes, we’ve done many dinners there and they are very friendly. Ownership just changed but it was bought by long-term employees so hopefully it will continue the same way.

What time are you thinking, Joe? I would advocate for 7pm, I'm having a hard time leaving work early enough to get there by 6 or 6.30...

If there's room, please add a tentative +1 for my wife.

Reservations are available at 730 so I booked for 9 ppl for then, which is the max without a special reservation. I prefer 8 but it gives us a buffer for an extra person. Assuming Andy's wife is in we're up to 6 so far and I may also have a guest.

You're in. I think you win the prize for fewest posts per year that you've been a member here, so I feel honored!

I'm going to make it waitlist from here. It's at least 50% likely the first person on the waitlist makes it in as my +1 is very tentative at this point (theme dependent, etc).

Unfortunately it's a no go to go above 9 on a normal reservation. They make you swap to fixed price banquets with much stricter conditions (like final counts that we will be charged for a week in advance , etc). I'm going to hold it at 9, but still reasonable odds for the waitlist between now and then.

No-one's thrown any out yet so I'm going to restate my request for theme suggestions. Doesn't have to be too narrow -- I was thinking maybe just Pinot and Chard, open to both old and new world. I welcome other suggestions though.

I would prefer old world or both, not new world only. My preference would be Chardonnay (or another white) + Syrah or Nebbiolo. I think that may be more interesting than the Chard/Pinot combo. But I'm happy to go with anything, really...

Sounds good. I intended to include both old and new world to leave that up to ppl, although I expect/suspect a mostly afwe bent.

Happy to swap pinot out for syrah, I'm very light on Nebbiolo, but wouldn't object if anyone brought some anyway!

How about Chard, Syrah, Nebbiolo?

My recommendation: Some people list some wines they would like to bring (in the categories you’ve listed would be fine, or not). Then let others match or complement as they like. I would prefer not to be too rigid about themes as people have different strengths in their cellars. I’d rather try something that you really like from your cellar rather than have you go out and source something you have no clue about.

Sounds good to me. Loose theme along these lines, match it as you will, or if someone has something else they love that they want to share, that works too. Champagne is always welcome!

We're thinking about bringing a white and a red. Here are a couple of options to get the ball rolling...

For whites I'm thinking Austrian Riesling (Nikolaihof or Pichler) or a Chablis (2011 Fevre Cote Bouguerots).

For reds, I have some 1998 Northern Rhones (Bernard Cote Rotie or Jaboulet Chapelle) or a 2009 Rostaing Cote Blonde that I've been wanting to open.

Could also do a 1978 Produttori Montefico, if old Nebbiolo is of interest and I'm open to Pinot (haven't looked).

I like both the vague and specific suggestions. My cellar is pretty diverse. Could easily support some Burgs (red or white) or Nebbiolos. And I always love drinking others’ Rhones (my cellar is fairly empty there). I could also bring some nicer CA wines (eg 2013 Littorai, I have both red and white). Or an ‘11 Donnhoff GG, been thinking those could be ready to charm now.

Honestly, all suggestions from both of you sound great. Thanks for kicking this off. Andy, while all of your suggestions are great, if you're looking for any steering Nebbiolo is an area I'm very unfamiliar with and haven't actually had any with significant (and proper!) age on it. So, I'd love the opportunity to try that. Otherwise all of the North Rhones sound great.

Rich, since you said you love drinking others' Rhones - maybe Andy should bring one of those and you can pick up the Nebbiolo torch. :)

I'm still debating on my side, maybe 2007 Clos Saron Heart of Stone Syrah. Maybe 2014 Yarra Yering Dry Red No.2. Or maybe Champagne :)

For reds, I have some 1998 Northern Rhones (Bernard Cote Rotie or Jaboulet Chapelle) or a 2009 Rostaing Cote Blonde that I've been wanting to open.
I have a 2010 Rostaing La Landonne that might be fun in a side-by-side, though I do not want to discourage from bringing the older stuff!

I could bring La Chapelle too. Maybe time to check the 99 again as CT notes are good recently.

We're only 5 days out now, very much looking forward to this!

I'd appreciate if people could please confirm their attendance so we know if there are any spots for the waitlisted folks. Thanks!

I'll update the OP if people know what they're bringing.

I'm still in and looking forward to my first offline!

Excited for syrah and nebbiolo. Since most people seem to be bringing red, I'll bring a white - 1995 Robert Ampeau & Fils Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce-sous-le-Bois. And since a 25 year old white burg is not exactly a sure thing, I'll bring some Champagne too champagne.gif

Confirmed. We'll bring the 1998 La Chapelle to go with Craig's 1999 and a 2007 Hirtzberger Riesling Hochrain.
