2015 La Dame de Montrose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe (11/26/2022)
Day 1: Good friend who works at a shop hooked me up with a discount and got this for under $40. Wonderful on the pop and pour. Roasted Chesnuts, gravel, minerals, raspberries, mild spice, cigar and damp leaves. Complex effort and medium plus finish. Nice acidity. 90-92 points
Day 2: Sour cherry, raspberries, gravel, spice, minerals, cigar and damp earth. While still young showing pretty good but next bottle let it sleep for 5 years. 90-92 points
Day 3: Wine is finally more open for business and more expressive. Black walnuts, minerals, earth, raspberries, cherry, cigar, spice and mild oak. Medium finish. 92 points
Recommendation: This needs at least 5 plus years in the cellar. Just not ready yet. (92 points)
I had an earlier version of this (I think 2005 but might have been 2000) years ago with the guy from the winery whose surname was something like de Laag de Smog de Fog (I can’t find it with Google) at Zachys. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of a “second” wine. If I recall correctly, he explained that it was not inferior terroir. It was just younger vines that were held out of the flagship. He was a nice guy who spent a lot of time talking to me about using the same process and effort to make a wine with the same quality, given the younger vines.
I thought I bought a few bottles, but I can’t find them in CT.
For sure can see the younger vines on this wine. For sure $40 well spent!
Nice note, John; thanks. This is always the first second I want to try out; in some vintages, it’s just crazy how good it is for the price. Sounds like I’ll have to give this '15 a try.
