Ladd Cellars - Two Library Bottles of 2005, Pinot & Syrah - Fantastic
Eric stumbled upon a case of 2005 Pinot Noir and a case of Syrah while doing spring cleaning. So he sent me a bottle of each to taste and I wrote up a note for each. These are really great wines and this is a chance to own something with some age on it if you’ve never had the experience. Except maybe the Syrah because it’s still very youthful!
Auction is for one bottle each:
- 2005 Ladd Cellars Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (1/26/2025)
12 years since somebody last wrote a tasting note and now I'm tasting at almost 20 years old.
The color is a murky brick exposing its age. All the sediment has kicked off and is stuck to the side of the bottle. The nose is ripe strawberry which is a bit shocking at this age, the fruit is held up beautifully. That's strawberry is also the primary flavor. It's wrapped around sandalwood and finishes with a beautiful menthol or eucalyptus flavor that fills the olfactory. Holding up beautifully but I'm not sure it'll improve because it's pretty terrific right now. - 2005 Ladd Cellars Syrah Las Madres Vineyard Carneros - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros (1/26/2025)
The color of this wine is dark and opaque without any bricking and gives no hint to its 20-year-old age. Deccanted for an hour to let it open up. The nose is expressive blackberry and I'm tasting out of a prototype glass from Fontaine for Berserkerday. Okay, this is impressive for its youthfulness, round tannins but still structure balanced with the acidity. Black fruit with a hint of tappenade running throughout the palate. Herbal notes of tarragon sage and parsley. Excellent

Eric said the corks are soft and best to use a Durant or Ah-so. I better start practicing with my Ah-so because this was a massacre.
