Anyone living in the US or Europe have a reliable (and reasonable) method for having wines shipped from Australia? I’m specifically interested in small winery mailing list type wines that don’t currently offer shipping outside of Australia. I’m an American currently living in The Netherlands, so could have wines shipped to either place, but I don’t know how to get it done. Any advice??? Thanks.
The winery should be able to arrange for you. The best way would be to consolidate an order at a winery and have them ship it en masse. Will cost you in the vicinity of $20 per bottle…not cheap!
There used to be a lovely wine shop in Brussels called Mig’s Wine World that had a very good range of hard to find Aussie wines…might be worth a shot.
Another solution is to talk to these guys http://www.eastendcellars.com.au/docs/international
Scott at cellarit.com has shipped wine I stored with him in Sydney for me in the past. Nice guy.
Dear Jason,
these guys have proven to be excellent

The only reasonable way of shipping wine long-distance that I’ve found when I was looking into it, was wine freight companies - like Wine Flow, Seaspace Int, JF Hillebrand, Freight Transport, etc.
However, the caveat, of course, is that you have to do it in pallets - 1 pallet = 50 full cases (roughly). Then the costs are in the region of $4-7 per bottle ex. dealing with the local taxes & duties.
And of course there is the issue of wine damage in transit - you either have to spring for airconditioned containers or ship only during particular times of the year and still run the risk of it, but then you have to store/aggregate the wine somewhere before shipping. A typical logistical nightmare…
Alternatively, you can use the services (some mentioned already here) that charge up from $20 per bottle for the shipment and send it by air. However, just from looking at some of the pricing on these, I’m wondering if it may actually be easier and/or cheaper to have the winery just airship it direct to you… I’m sure it can be arranged even if they don’t do it routinely.
Thanks to all for your suggestions - this one isn’t exactly cheap, but it looks like the easiest way to go for what I’m looking for.
