We’re going to the Azores island of Terceira next month. I don’t see any prior posts about the area in the past few years. Any suggestions about restaurants, attractions, or wines one may encounter would be most appreciated.
Thanks.
It’s part of Portugal so I would assume you’ll see lots of their wines.
You will certainly be able to find and appreciate the wines of Azores Wine Company. This is the project of the outstanding winemaker António Maçanita. Produced on the volcanic soils of Pico. Known primarily for their white wines, Arinto dos Açores and Verdelho o Original, they are also starting to experiment with reds though I’ve not tried them. I will be on Sao Miguel myself later this month and hope to make a short visit to Pico.
Lot of great whites from Pico. Reds are not so great.
Cheeses from the Azores are fantastic.
Thanks all. We won’t get to Pico but I’m sure we’ll see the wines. There’s apparently very limited wine production in Terceira. We may visit a cheese maker. Any restaurant advice for Terceira anyone?
Reiterate what everyone says above, the whites are the way to go, and they’re cheap and delicious.
We were in Terceira over New Years a year and a half ago (but were traveling with our young kids so tailored our movements to that a bit).
We had a very nice dinner at Taberna Roberto, who has a wonderful selection of Azores and broader Portugese wines. Another good dinner (seafood heavy) was at Rating Beira Mar Restaurant São Mateus.
We also did find one winery to visit/taste at: Casa Agricola Brum, which in addition to table wines also has some fortified Verdelho that was unique
Should have added we stayed in Angra do Heroismo and had a car (helped with accessing some of the hikes in the center of the island)
Thanks AD. We’ll be in Angra with a car as well. Plan for Taberna Roberto (on Mothers’ Day!), and your recommendation triangulates Beira Mar for us. Any additional thoughts on experiences, food, etc will be welcome.
Most of our time was spent hiking/being outside. Our kids really enjoyed the (moderate difficulty) hike up to the crater and signal tower just south of town (we had lunch afterwards in town at one of the places on Rua de Sao Joao whose name escapes me, nothing special but convenient).
They/we also enjoyed Algar do Carvao (though it was exceeded by the lava tube visit in Pico a few days after, which I believe there are separate lava tubes on Terceira too) and the “black mysteries” trails in the center of the island.
Aside from that, the stop at Casa Agricola Brum was geat, and we spen an aftenroon just driving around the outside of the island stopping for views/any shops we wanted to check out.
Absolutely LOVED Azores.
But we did Sao Miguel, Pico and Faial.
Food is amazing.
Too bad you’re not doing Pico.
Food at Azore Wine Company was really outstanding ( they had a restaurant with a young chef Jose, Michelin quality food).
Butter and cheese are amazing in Azores.
Also, don’t overlook their canned tuna/ventresca, and other fish.
My favorite is Ventresca by Corre Torre which I only found at the airport…I bought 20 cans, and the woman there said somebody once bought 50
Tenorio and Minerva are also good.
Thanks so much Dan and Andrew!
