Cleaning a gas grill

So our new place game with a BBQ island. It seems like the prior owners never cleaned the thing as the grates were thick with goo and the covers right across the burner were ashy.

I took the grates off, sprayed it down with some cleaner and took to it with the scrapper/wire. Also cleaned up the cover of the burners.

Now it doesn’t look like I did a nice enough job as there’s still some gunk on the grate. Should I soak the things in a tub of water with soap? also any tips for cleaning the burner itself? I was going to take the grate/cover off and see if the burner is a-ok.

“Easy-Off” or any other spray oven cleaners should take care of your problems. I think. If you look, there are brands that don’t have to be used on hot parts.

u might try a self clean oven cycle…of if you have an outside grillheat on extreeme high…will carbonize the gunk…and you can scape off

Get a new set of grates, can be order online. With all the grates out, light the burners to make sure you have an even flame.

I get a professional.griill tune up from a Weber dealer…75 bucks was well worth it…something to consider also

I’ve run stainless steel grates thru my dishwasher with good results. Wouldn’t advise it with cast iron!

Get 'em good and hot and hit 'em with a wire brush. End of story. The gunk will be inert.

tried that. still has some gunk. Stuff is heavy duty haha.

Thanks for all the advice so far, maybe i’ll have a “grill tuneup”, no clue what abuse this thing has gone through. When I first opened it, it reeked of beer. The idiots also never had a cover over it, so who knows what’s rusted inside. I need to give it a more detailed once over.

First our BBQ reeks of beer, the fridge of kimchi, wonderful.

scrape down the sides and bottom remove all carbonized (and other material) if you have a drill and can get to a hardware store, get a round wire brush thing that goes into the drill and go to town on the grates after they have been heated. be sure to clean the little holes along the heating elements so you get even gas distribution. Once you think you are good to go, slice an eggplant thin enough to cover the entire grilling surface with said eggplant slices and cook them for 10 min to see if the browning is even.

Assuming you work has brought the grill back to life, I’d suggest (assuming cast iron grates) that you season the grates with many coats of oil ( cranked heat, brush or wipe with oil wait a min or so… and then repeat TEN TIMES) seems like a lot but when you do this and cook your first filet of fish flesh side down and it does not stick you will understand…

The guys that professionall cleaned mine…used what mel said…rotory wire,plus a paint remover brush,pluS dental tools to clean clogged orafices…and compressed air to blow it all ouf

I am amazed at how slovenly people can be. What they did with the grill, using but never cleaning, is akin to wearing clothes,
tossing them into the hamper afterwards, and then retrieving to wear again repeatedly. Ewwwww.

Cover the grates with foil and crank it. Then the stuff will flake right off.

I would order new grills from the manufacturer, who is the manufacturer BTW? Depending on how old it is, I would also get it professionally serviced. There are companies that do that kind of stuff. And while they’re out there, have them add a kegerator. :slight_smile:

How did the wine move go over the weekend? Does the cabinet look empty, begging for more bottles?

Yeah I’m going to look into new grills. I don’t remember the manufacturer. Definitely getting it professionally serviced, who knows what else is there.

Once the grill is up to snuff, let’s do an inaugural Flannery/Kimchi Fest! I’ll bring a huge jar of it and you can keep the rest as a housewarming present.

take the grates off and place them on top of your burners until white hot then brush with a stiff wire brush. If your burners are wimpy or just plain suck then throw them on top of your weber that has been stoked with a healthy amount of white hot mesquite. Alternatively, if you have a steel plate to cover them with you could do that and then turn on the burners until they are clean. The reality is thogh if the grates wont come clean in normal use then the burners suck.

I keep my grills forever with only a little maintenance. My wife insists that I use a teflon grilling sheet that is perforated on top of the grates. That way we can wash it in the sink everytime we use it. All I do with the grate is scrape it down between uses.

Eventually the whole thing needs a cleaning. After trying to turn it all to ash under high heat, I toll the grates and burners, use a putty knife to scrape off enoughg of the goo to make me happy, and install new grates and burners from Home Depot (I have a Weber). It runs pretty much like new after that.

WIth your mess, I would buy a new grill, too.
