Coravin Blind test

I’ve been intrigued by the Coravin System since the start and finally got to play with it this past weekend. a fellow wine enthusiast with a sick cellar decided to try some wines.

We took 2 pristine bottles of 2006 Jadot Amoureuses to see if we could tell the difference. The first bottle - we’ll call it bottle “A” for the purposes of this exercise, was opened via normal ‘rabbit’ style corkscrew. perfect super long jadot cork. unreal aromatics upon opening. We decanted this immediately into a classic decanter.

The second bottle - bottle “B” - was subjected to the Coravin; inserted the needle to release the wine. It took a few seconds, but after getting the hang of it, the wine flowed properly. We used the Coravin to empty the contents of bottle “B” into the same exact decanter. (not the same decanter, another decanter, but the same kind of decanter - right).

we then had one of our wives mark the decanters as “X” and “Y” - so we wouldn’t know which was the regular pour vs. the Coravin pour.

We all drank both versions over the course of a few hours, but keeping close tabs on the results. I was shocked that at the end of both bottles, consensus in the room was that the Coravin’d wine was much more fresh and effusive. Meaty tones with classic Chambolle elements of earth and bright, airy fruit. The normally decanted wine was excellent as well, but just didn’t have that extra “there” there.

Obviously, this is anecdotal and one single data point, but it inspired me to try more. This is a great and fun addition to the wine arsenal.

Sante!! as they say.

I must be missing something. Isn’t the real test if you only Coravin’d half a bottle, than tried the second half a week or two later against a new bottle? BTW, I have a Coravin, have used it a couple of times, and think its great. Looking forward to trying it out some more.

+1 on Brad

wait what? So you corovan’d a bottle into a decanter and you also did a normal pour into the decanter and then compared them?

Here’s what I’d like to see. Coravin a couple of glasses out of the first bottle. Then wait a month or so, open a second bottle and the Coravin bottle and do a blind comparison.

edit: oops, what Brad said…

This must be a joke post but I do not get the joke?

i think quite a few people have done that in the coravin thread

I guess that thread got so long I gave up on it. I’ll have to go back and slog through it.

separate decanters, but exactly the same decanter style/make/model. to compare.

to be clear, filled each exact same decanter with the full contents of the bottle, but different bottles. of the same wine.

that’s exactly what we did.

I don’t think the OP knows what the point of the Coravin is.

OR

This is a joke.

Either way, I’m laughing my ass off right now.

It was a very tough day at the office, so the sarcasm was lost on me. Sorry.

lol…are you sure it was a coravin and not a vinturi?

Are you sure you know what the Coravin does?

I had been holding out but this post convinced me. Coravin on its way!

Coravining…the new Audouzing? I am suddenly concerned for Yaacov that this is not a joke…

Forgot to mention that we also tried with a screw-capped Sancerre. We only had one bottle so no proper comparison but wine was excellent. Didn’t realize it worked for whites as well.

Come on, man! The joke was so good, but you really tipped your hand with this last post. Too obvious…

Replaced the cap with a cork and then caravin’d. I read about someone doing that in the longer thread.
