Danny Meyer Requiring Staff & Guests Be Vaccinated

Ate in NYC last night at one of my go to places. Since they re-opened for indoor dining a few months ago they have been requiring proof of vaccination to dine there. Now they are requiring an ID card and proof of vax. I asked about the change and the hostess said, you’d be stunned at the lengths that people go to get around proof of vax.

We’ve eaten out here pretty much every day since the vaccine pass came into action ten days ago.

No issues so far.

There are the odd protests. Usually on a Saturday afternoon but you have to go out of your way to see them. There are always protests on Saturday for something or other.

That vaccine pass is awesome. A French friend was showing me his the other day. Also awesome that the French government has mandated it to eat at a restaurant and other things instead of leaving it o the venues themselves.

As of yesterday proof of vaccination is mandatory for indoor dining in NYC. We have a month of an ‘adjustment’ period and it will be enforced by public health officials starting in September.

NY state has the ‘Excelsior Pass’ app so you can have your vaccination record on your phone and the restaurant can scan the QR code to verify it.

We had an interesting experience tonight. A restaurant we like, Pizzeria Mercato in Chapel Hill (liberal college town in the county with the highest vaccination rate in the state) reopened to a few weeks ago for guests, and decided last week to require proof of vaccination, only the second or third place in our area to do so. As my family was entering the restaurant, 10 or 15 protesters with signs saying things like “Vaccine is Poison” picketed on the sidewalk in front of the place. What was funny though was it was like a flash mob, gone in 10 minutes. I am guessing there has been no picketing in NYC.

Victor that is true…made me think of “no shoes, no service” infringing on someone’s personal liberties to dine barefoot.

We started requiring proof of vaccination at our restaurant this past Tuesday. We turned off the ability to respond to social media posts and did not participate in any interviews with news outlets, so never got protesters. The people responding on social media and those protesters aren’t customers anyway. Our response has been 100% positive from real customers and we’ve seen un uptick in reservations I’m attributing to it. Our customers (and Gabe’s) want to feel safe, our staff wants to feel safe, and we want our business to keep going. It was the only choice to make. I wish that the city or county would mandate it.

Just be thankful you’re not prohibited from requiring proof of vaccination, like establishments in Texas are …

Nathan and I are in a moderately liberal urban area of a purple state - Democrat governor and Republican legislature. Since this is cyclical, I hate to think how this might have come down at a different time, but it’s working reasonably well right now, although with my son just starting college and living in a dorm I wish they could mandate vaccines.

Here is a comment from a restaurant group beverage director on another forum which floored me, this person was responding to this comment the other day NYC vaccine mandate: New York City is the first US city to require proof of at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine for indoor dining, gyms, and performances.
"Vaccine mandates are an abhorrent affront to personal liberties, and should be treated as the authoritarian trojan horses that they are"

And oh how the tune would change if this were, say, smallpox. Aside from all the other inherent hypocrisies. The debate with these idiots starts with, at what death rate DO you agree with a vaccine mandate? And have you ever heard of typhoid Mary?

It’s worth noting that the policy does not apply to Shake Shack, which goes to show just how difficult it is even for someone like Danny Meyer to implement a sane policy in the current environment.

Correct. And Danny Meyer is founder and Chairman of the Board. Apparently that’s not good enough to push through a vaccine requirement or even, to this point, to get any sort of vaccine policy implemented.
