Help with Txakoli

I don’t know producers in Getaria and that area of great Txakolina.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.

First thing you need to know is how to pronounce it…

Where are you buying that you have enough options to really pick and choose? [wow.gif] I’ve had Txakolina from Arregi and Ulacia and thought both were excellent. I would buy anything you can find locally since most whites are under $20. Might be hard to go wrong with any from a reputable retailer.

I don’t pretend to know anything about Basque wines, but have been drinking Ameztoi wines on recommendation our local ‘natural’ wine shop. Both the red (Stimatum) and rose (Rubentis), are slightly frizzante, both very good, especially the rose.

here’s a ct pointer to the rose.

I will be in the Getaria area and in the heart of Txakoli country for a few days. I have all options at my disposal. I just don’t know the producers.

K&L carries the Ameztoi wines (including the Rose) for what it’s worth. Europa Wine Merchant out of Portland carries the Arregi and Mokoroa (which I haven’t tried yet).

Well there you go. I think very little Txakolina makes it to the United States so there are probably only so many producers that US consumers will have experience with. Ulacia, Ameztoi and Arregi are probably good places to start.

Two words: Txomin Etxaniz.

I’ll +1 this.

We tasted tons of txakoli and couldn’t tell you a producer for 90%.

Walk into any bar and order a txakoli and grab a pincho. [cheers.gif]

Pronounced cha-ko-lee

Don, I have no expertise here, but at a recent tasting I liked most of the Ameztoi wines but preferred the ones from Doniene Gorrodona.

Came in to say these two. Ameztoi for white & Gorrodona for red.

Thanks to all.
Mike. I am going to run this down from Gorrodona.
None of these wines cost more than 13 euros or so.
Should be able to try more than a few!

We had lunch at Elkano two weeks ago (probably the best experience I have ever had) and our waiter told us that there are 3 main producers in the Getaria region, Txomin Etxaniz (which we had for lunch as was fantastic), Ganeta (which we also had for lunch and was also very good though not at the level of Txomin Etxaniz - a bit lighter, less serious, but nonetheless pleasing), and a third one that escapes me. So I guess if you somehow manage to figure out the third, you pretty much covered the region. Perhaps the best is to have lunch at Elkano and try all three.

The real issue is pouring from 2 meters into a small glass.

… with a flat bottom

Txomin also makes a fabulous sparkling wine (Eugenia) and a fantastic late harvest. Beats anything else I’ve ever tasted in terms of Txakoli producers in Getaria or further afield.

Thanks to everybody.

Mostly I’ve bought Txomin Etxaniz and Ameztoi, but also really enjoyed Txakoli from Urki. But I’m not 100% sure latter is Getaria.
The only really disappointing Txakoli I remember was one called Ametza, which I mistakenly purchased thinking of Ameztoi. :frowning:

Yeah, it seems like a great idea at the time. LOL
