Higher End Paso Robles Wineries

Other than the Saxum, Booker, Epoch. La Aventure, Linne Calodo, Turley, Tablas Creek, and possibly Terry Hoage and Justin , and, excluding Peachy Canyon, what other wineries do you really feel put quality wines in Paso?

My picks would be RN, Cypher, Oso Libre and Carmody McNight, how about you??

Graves Winegrowers
Ranchero Cellars
Kinero
Villa Creek
Dover Canyon (hit and miss, but their hits are very good)
Lone Madrone (same comment as Dover Canyon; same winemaker as Tablas Creek, btw (Neil Collins))
Summerwood
Denner

+1 for Villa Creek and Denner

I forgot denner you are correct and ron denner is a gem even though he bleeds trojan red instead of bruin blue.

If my stop there last fall was any indication, this would not be on my list. Nothing that they poured at would I want to drink. Bought a bottle of Olive Oil since I felt we needed to buy something. Used it to cook with and left the remaining in the room for the next guests.

I would add Windward. I was so knocked out with the 2007 reserve or whatever they call it that I will overlook that I did not like the other wines. I guess that puts them in the hit or miss category.

Brian I like there higher end wines and their malbec is very tasty. Have you tried cypher yet??

No, I have not tried Cypher.

Villa Creek, Denner, McPrice Meyers

Not the priciest, but…

Adelaida - Their whites are my favorite in the Paso Area. Their reds need cellaring to show what they have.
Caliza - Reasonably priced wines that also need some time to show their best.
Torrin - Big, impressive wines, but still balanced.

And seriously under the radar is:
Thacher - Some very nice whites and the reds are better and better.

Go look at the write ups here: grape-nutz.com. Ken and Eric do a great job of documenting wineries but you have to read closely to know when to visit or avoid. I would recommend Hug and right next door is McPrice Myers on 46 east of 101. Tulley Court, I believe.

I agree on Dover Canyon. I liked the wines while tasting but I don’t think they age gracefully. I consider them immediate drinkers.

Jack Creek

Herman Story is great, yet I would consider them far more reasonable.

Torrin’s 2009s are EXCELLANT!!

Forgot about Kenneth Volk, too. Had some really nice Spanish varietals of his a few weeks ago at TAPAS in SF. Bodegas Paso Robles also does some nice Spanish.

You were at TAPAS, Linda? Bummer, I missed seeing you there.

Linda I do like Volk but I thought they was a lot of Portiguese varietals. Also Daou - and the wine tasting room is as nice as it gets.

Windward- some of their older reserve Pinots can be knockouts as said.

Asuncion Ridge - has a room downtown. Single vineyard estate pinot, blend of 115, pommard, 777 clones. Pretty ripe, but they can have a lot going on in them. Lean up with age too. Their 3 room B&B is only place we stay, it is off the charts.

I’m sipping a Villa Creek James Berry now. A “wow” wine.
