Keeping Unfinished Bottle of Champagne Overnight

If I don’t have a champagne stopper, what is the best way to keep an opened bottle of champagne overnight?

I’ve read a few posts of others finishing bottles of champagne on the second day. I was wondering what the best methods were to preserve the bubbles. Thanks in advance.

Jam an old wine cork in there. Inexpensive, easy, and effective.

I find whisky / bourbon corks work very well for a least a day.

In the past ive just put tin foil over the top, i think the big thing is to just not move it around.

We’ve had wines keep their bubbles effortlessly if the bottle is kept completely undisturbed in a fridge, but not stoppered with anything. Closing it with a sparkling wine clamp or something gives a little benefit, but is not necessary.

Push a cork in. If you are worried about pressure, keep the cage when you open it, and replace it over the new cork.

I’m unfamiliar with an unfinished bottle of bubbles so I cannot answer this question :man_shrugging:t3:

If its young, you don’t need anything. It will be fine just sitting open in the refrigerator.

The older it is the harder its going to be to preserve the bubbles. Do your best with what you have on hand. Don’t be surprised if they have faded overnight even under a stopper. At some age the bubbles are just going to fade fairly quickly.

The most important thing to remember is that you will be building up pressure if you stopper it. Something that does not clamp may exit the bottle of its own accord at anytime.

Caveat, this advice is only for wines that are made methode Champenois. That is, where the bubbles are created in the wine with a fermentation in bottle. For cheaper sparkling wines…good luck.

I once opened a bottle the night before leaving town for a week and left it without a closure in the fridge. It was still highly effervescent (and drinking well) when I returned.

Fridge, uncovered. Works fine for up to 2 days.

Buy a Champagne stopper? Unless you like flat Champagne. Also, if it’s not at least half full its going to be flat even with a good quality stopper. Of course a lot of people here are talking about young Champagne which I don’t drink.

I suppose this is the longest you’ve managed to keep your hands off a bottle of opened sparkling wine?

I’ve had great success with WOTOR (among other) champagne stoppers

I’ve tried a bunch. I like the Le Creuset champagne stopper the best. I find it fits most bottles and preserves the bubbles the longest.

I use these regularly anytime I open a bottle that isn’t going to be finished. These work great, are very affordable.
