Latour 2016

I’ve been looking forward to release but life happens and not sure I have the funds. I’m rather surprised by usual sources haven’t reached out with an offer. Definitely complex times.

WDC offer today at $750 in OWC. But ships October, not sure who carries the tariff risk.

We’re air freighting. Won’t be price leaders, but we also won’t have tariffs.

Crurated - 585 euros + fees
Vint - $699 in OWC

I thought this was going to release at $1k/bottle, minimum. But my thoughts were formed many months ago, before various events wreaked havoc and economic insecurity here and throughout the world, and haven’t been amended in accordance with the situation we now find ourselves in.

For my US folks - whats the best way to acquire?

$699 from vint or other places doing it for better?

Total Wine posted at $725

I went with my local shop that is also flying in to avoid tariffs. Maybe a little more but no tariff risk. Only getting a single bottle anyhow.

I’m starting to get offers around the $725 level. On the fence about pulling the trigger.

I’m super confused on how air freight avoids tariffs.

Also not clear if “pre-orders” from big retailers like total wine, wine .com, etc will be subject to tariffs. These are first world problems but confusing times!

Timing. You can get them air freight before the tariffs kick in.

Air gets to the US before the effective date of the tariffs. Not sure what that exact date is, but April 1 has been talked about. If you put it on the water now, won’t get here by 4/1.

It is really hard to get space on planes at the moment, I had a small pallet of ten cases that took three weeks for a booking from March 1st and I have another order from last week that is three pallets that is waiting on a booking and has not been confirmed.

3 bottles Latour 2016. For my son’s son.
Means I don’t have to worry about tariffs.

Going auction price for 2016 Mouton and Lafite is about $600 a bottle so that’s probably where this settles, unless you really value the provenance aspect or the tariffs screw everything up

2016 doesn’t seem to carry the vintage premium that eg 2009 does

Have there ever been any vintages more overpriced than 2009 and 2010? Maaaaaybe 2021? <— that argument relies just as much on high prices as it does sub-par quality, however. I want to throw 2022 into the ring, but so many folks apparently like those wines that I’m not sure that argument has much runway.

Have no problem calling 2022 overpriced. There is usually hype when a good vintage comes to market, and there is a lot of that with 2022. When 2023 arrives, I am pretty sure there will be a lot of discussion of value plus quality.

But there is no way that 2022 is the equal of 2016 generally, which I feel is a seriously great year, and the Latour with six years more bottle age is a decent buy. In general the 2016 are just a little more expensive, but given quality, and the opportunity cost of six years, it is still a better buy.

I agree that the 2009 are overpriced; it was released when the Chinese started buying, and I suspect a greater percentage ended up there, creating a little bit of scarcity here.

09/10 were ridiculously priced. If I’m not mistaken you can still buy most of these wines at close to release.

I also think Latour normally trades above Lafite and ceertainly Mouton. I paid 500 euro and I thoguht that was fair.

You mean 09/10 were overpriced on release, right? I meant that the 2009 premium has held up for a long time now on the secondary market, which indicates consumer demand supports it at least somewhat. I think the 2009 vintage style (lush and fruity) probably appeals more to consumers in general than the 2016 style (precise and crisp). But the reverse is the case around here

Yes, that’s what I meant – 09/10 overpriced on release. But here we are 12-13 years after release and those prices have not moved — that’s unusual, especially for highly-regarded vintages, which is indicative of release pricing that was too high.

@Mark_Golodetz , I’ve not tasted any '22’s, nor do I really have any interest in doing so. Particularly if they’re similar to '15 or '09 — are they?

That depends on what you bought, and the price you paid. Almost everything I purchased is higher, if not much higher in price. And I bought a lot of 2009, as I love the vintage .
