Frontaura Aponte

António Maçanita’s Fita Preta series: highly creative (dare I say boundary pushing) terroir inspired, quality approach to winemaking for no more than 25€ a bottle.

Anselmo Mendes’ Contacto. Can’t think of a better summer quaffer for 10€.

A lot of wines from the Portuguese cooperatives who have learned to upgrade by hiring very competent oeonologists. The ones like Vila Real or Vermelha are turning out daily drinkers that, for 3-5€, are quite simply unbelievable. Others, sadly, have yet to follow suit.

The wines I buy the most of under $40 (in UK) regardless of vintage and I enjoy as much as wines that cost 2-3x that price:
LdH Riservas
Musar
PYCM BB
Balthazar CdR
Prum Kabinett/Spatlese
Keller von der fels
Lauer Kabinetts

Too many German wines to mention (none titled GG, a German term apparently meaning raise the price)
Dublere Chorey les Beaune
Wines from the Cote Chalonnaise from producers like Faiveley, Villaine, Domaine des Moirots, Juillot and others
Ridge Geyserville
Chateau Pradeaux
Bernard Moreau Bourgogne Blanc
Chablis Premier Crus from Christian Moreau and Moreau-Naudet
Hudelot-Noellat and Jouan villages level wines
Rossignol-Trapet Latricieres Chambertin
Ramonet and Bernard Moreau CM rouge
Croix Beaucaillou

For me the list is as follows:
Felsina Chianti Classico (non-reserva) (as previously mentioned by others)
Bedrock Old Vines Zin (as previously mentioned by others)
Nino Franco Prosecco Rustico
Trimbach Riesling
Bodega Chacra “Barda” Pinot Noir
Nervi Gattinara
Beaurenard CDP
Ciacci Rosso di Montalcino
Donnafugata Ben Rye
Domaine De Villaine Bouzeron (Aligote)
Felsina Vino Spumante Brut Millesimato (I’ve found this near impossible to find in the US)
Uccelliera Rosso di Montalcino
GD Vajra Rosa Bella (Rosato)
Alvaro Palacios Carmins del Priorat
Belle Pente (several from this producer): Pinot Gris, Muscat, Estate Chardonnay, Gamay, Belle Pente Vineyard Pinot Noir, and Estate Reserve Pinot Noir

A lot of the non-Barolo or Barbaresco bottlings to come out of Piedmont: Freisa, Grignolino, Barbera, Dolcetto, Pelaverga, Arneis, Nebbiolo Langhe. I find many of these grapes to be unbelievably unique, complex, and sometimes age worthy. I also enjoy the history behind a lot of these producers and/or grapes. Favorite producers across the board for the most part include: GB Burlotto, Cavallotto, GD Vajra, Ettore Germano and Bruno Giacosa (on the pricier side for this category), and most other solid producers from the region.

Any particular vintage your fond of?

Both 16 and 17 have been great. The '17 is lovely and pretty and drinking really well now.

Antonio Vallana. The Campi Raudii, Boca and Gattinara. At $16, $20 and $26 ish respectively, the best bang for your buck in red wine I know.
