No I’m not a Silver oak fan. But as the wine director for three NJ retailers, I need to buy it for my customers. The newly released 2018 Silver Oak Napa Cab wholesale price went through the roof; a 55$ per bottle increase over the 2017 Napa. NJ is a weird market because there are unique (and legal) Retailer Incentive programs called RIPS. retailers will get 25.00 a bottle back 30 days after the Silver oak invoice is paid. From what I understand prices on Silver Oak are way up in all markets on the Napa bottling.
Interesting. I can’t remember which vintage/bottling it was, but some Silver Oaks were being sold for `$78ish in my local region, non internet sales.
What was the total price please, if you’re allowed to share?

That had to be the Alexander Valley bottling.
The last time I had Silver Joke it was gifted to me by someone special. I could not get through half the bottle and ended up dumping the rest. Gross.
I really enjoyed Silver Oak in the 80’s and early 90’s. Then they lost some vineyards and the style changed. have not has one since.
A $55 increase seems aggressive. maybe they know their market and it will sell.
I had it about a year ago. Not at all as offensive or over the top as it’s made out here. I’ve had tons of worse stuff.
In Connecticut the WS price on 2018 Silver Oak Napa went from $102 to $124.
I think there are two factors at play:
-
Silver Oak raising prices just like everyone else. Chappellet Sig Cab went from $65 to $95 in my market. Montelena estate from $160 to $195. Just two examples and this board as talked extensively about increases in last 12 months.
-
Perhaps trying to further reposition the Napa as a more premium position similar to Montelena Estate, Caymus SS, etc.
No personal knowledge other than an outsider looking in.
I just removed 2 cali wines for large price hikes.
They could be bracing for an incredibly short, or possibly not being released 2020 vintage.
