Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard

Just got the Myriad mailer and saw Mike is making a syrah from this vineyard. Anybody have any experience with it? I haven’t heard of it.

Was wondering the same thing.

I had a chance to taste it with Mike in September. Didn’t take any notes, but I remember thinking that I liked it better than the other syrahs he has done…even the 2010 Kenefick he did under the Quivet label, which was quite good.

Sorry no help on the Syrah, but I know Russell Bevan sources Cab from that vineyard. His Whitney bottling.

Isn’t there a winery with this name in Maryland?

That’s the first thing that popped into my head as well (Sugarloaf Mountain is about 35 miles from my house), but there must be one on the left coast as well…

This name sure seemed familiar- and I pulled this box (85-85 vertical) out of the offsite today. Sugarloaf Ridge it was- from the “better” side of the hill (Sonoma County). IIRC, I was told the winemaker/owner died and the label was defunct- but Google revealed a local phone number (answering maching) as well as a Tasmanian label of the same name…no idea what happened to the label…But now the wines are at the house and I just need to find a reason to open them- and toast the person who made them- be they living or dead…so- a diferrent project, but time to drink these- thanks for jogging my ever worsening memory!

Strong vertical there 85 to 85.

The force is strong in those. even the 86 and 87.

South end of Napa sort of near the Meritage Resort on the Soscol extension (Hwy 221).

It was developed by PPV and was part of the CalPERS portfolio, I believe. I hand’t heard if they unloaded this one, but it could have happened.

Yes it was a CalPERS property managed by premier pacific. Pretty sure Bevan makes wine from this property.

Sugarloaf Mountain is as Nate said in Southern Napa. It is one of the rockiest vineyards in the Napa Valley. It almost looks like parts of the Rhone Valley. It ripens later as it is so close to the Bay, but it gets ripe every year, even at 12.5 alcohol, which we have had twice there, the flavors and textures always seem to develop. We get Cabernet Franc and Merlot there that is super intense. Know how detail oriented Mike is I would be very interested in trying the wine.

All the best,
Russell Bevan
