Sun Break Pinot Noir Futures are back! Friends and clients have joined me for barrel tastings over the last few weeks, and the 2021 Pinot Noir is tasting great… this will be a stellar vintage. In a nutshell, the wine already shows rich flavors and smooth tannins, with a tad less natural acidity and more black fruit flavors compared to previous vintages.
Futures are $204/case ($17/bottle), a 50% discount from the current retail price of $408/case, $34/bottle.
For local folks, or those of you planning a visit to the Willamette Valley, let me know if you’d like to schedule a tasting. I plan barrel tastings every two weeks or so to coincide with my barrel topping schedule (i.e., slots are limited). This year I am excited to have all six clones from the Cortell-Rose Vineyard, and it is interesting and fun to sample the different Pinots and make blends as we go.
To order, or for more information reply to this email and let me know which Pinot(s) you would like to reserve (full case increments please). Deadline: May 1, 2022. Once you’ve made a selection, I’ll send you an invoice via email. The delivery date is completely flexible, i.e. when it’s convenient to you (there are no cellaring fees). Your delivery or shipment dates are also flexible (for example, if you order 6 cases of futures, you can request 1 mixed or full case be delivered/shipped every 6 months over 3 years). Shipping and local tax charges, if applicable, will be charged at the time of shipment.
Available Futures:
2021 Colette Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley: 100% destemmed grapes/berries fermentation. This year we have all six clones from the vineyard: Pommard, Wadensvil, Dijon 114, 115, 667 and 777. A 100% destemmed Pinot tends to have more fruit and tannin extraction and intensity, and more natural acidity than the whole cluster Ariane.
2021 Ariane Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley: 100% whole cluster fermentation. This year we have four clones from the vineyard: Pommard, Dijon 114, 667 and 777. A 100% whole cluster Pinot tends to have softer and lighter fruit and tannin expression with added savory and spice notes from the stems, and less natural acidity than the destemmed wine (potassium from the stems raises the pH).
2021 Marie-Paule Pinot Noir, Cortell-Rose Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley: a blend of the two fermentation styles, to be determined in the Spring. Similar to Colette, we will use all six clones from the vineyard: Pommard, Wadensvil, Dijon 114, 115, 667 and 777. My goal for Marie-Paule is to combine the best of both fermentation styles for added nuance and complexity. In theory this Pinot should be the best of the three, but everyone has their preferences depending on their palate, food pairings and cellaring plan.
Thanks for your support!
Cheers,
David
