1959 Antonio Ferrari Solaria Jonica Puglia IGT- Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT (4/17/2015)
Bizarre. Opaque crimson. Nose is quite mature and complex, a hybrid of Madeira-like root beer, sourdough, almond, and apricot scents with Port-like notes of prune and alcohol. All in all I found the smell fairly off-putting. The taste is much simpler, quite sweet, just raisin and residual sugar. This seemed disjointed to me. I’m under the impression it was the product of a stuck fermentation, and I guess I can now see why such wines are usually considered defective. (86 pts.)
Yes, I just picked it up last week. They weren’t bottled that long ago, right? I thought they were just sitting in a vat forever because the winery didn’t know what to do with the juice and didn’t want to pour it down the drain.
IWM indeed. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the provenance; I just don’t think I like the style. By “not that long ago” I meant, like, closer to now than to 1959.
