Had this last night as a last minute decision on a bottle to enjoy while watching Rescue Me.
Popped and poured. When I pulled the cork, it had some serious barnyard funk to it…but it blew off rather quickly. Nice color as it is starting to brick a tad. Once opened up, it gave a wonderful nose of violets, licorice and wet earth. Palate was very rich with sweet licorice, truffles, dark fruits and the slightest hint of oak. This wine remains my absolute favorite from South America year in, year out. It tasted as good, if not better, than any ten year old BDX or CA Cab I have had. Can’t remember, but I think it was only $35 on release when I got it, and I am glad to have two more bottles.
This is a very useful TN, Bill. I have been wondering about the evolution and ageability of these wines. Your notes suggests that I should be in no rush to drink mine, which date only back to 2003.
Well-time note, Bill. I was just looking through CT and saw I’ve got a bottle of this stashed away. I had one closer to release, and it rocked. Sounds like this is going to be awesome. Good deal. Thanks for the look.
No question to me on the ageability of the DM. I have them going from '99 through '05, and while very enjoyable young, they do shine with a few years on them.
Go Costco! Can’t wait to wait a decade and try some of those 05 Mags!
Bill which one have you enjoyed the most out of the 99-05? My experience is very limited to 03-05.
Having said that, I think the 2005 will be the best of the bunch long term because it seems to have everything in balance to go the distance. I have six mags to experiment with.
I had the '95 not too long ago, and it was definately in its drinking window. Lots of tobacco, leather and earth. Seemed much more old world than the current bottlings. Wonderful wine, but not something to cellar any longer.
