- 2000 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley (4/15/2025)
Last minute replacement for a different wine that was undrinkable, this showed very well despite zero prep. It has a ton of sediment, so decanting or filtering of pours is highly recommended. Beyond that it's an elegant wine that hearkens back to the '80s and early '90s in terms of weight. There is also a bit of green alongside the fruit, which adds brightness/freshness to a 25 year old wine. The tannins are still in evidence, with a bit of back end astringency.
I can see this vintage being divisive, with fans of modern Napa Cabernet considering it light or unripe. For me it's thoroughly enjoyable, as the wine shows the full spectrum of Cabernet Sauvignon aromas, flavors, and textures, rather than just being a showcase for uber-ripe fruit.
